Rafe Sagarin - marine ecologist, conservationist, science communicator, father, husband, brother, and friend - was killed on May 28th by a drunk driver while on an evening bicycle ride near Biosphere 2 in southern Arizona.

Rafe was 43 years old - full of boundless energy and optimism as well as gigantic and creative vision. He was loved for his enormous smile, generosity, and devotion to his family.

Rafe will be missed dearly by all, but his family especially faces the unrelenting effect of his absence. Please join us in honoring Rebecca and their daughters through financial support in this time of need.

New York Times obituary from June 3rd.

The University of Arizona ran this remembrance piece on June 3rd.

The Monterey County Weekly ran this obituary on June 1st, 2015.

For the past two years, Rafe led the transformation of the Biosphere 2 ocean into a Gulf of California analog for research and education. He also strived, through his work with the UA Institute of the Environment and the Carson Scholar Program, to communicate science to broad audiences and effect positive change. To learn more about his work and innovative thinking you can read one or more of Rafe's books .

The family is also suggesting that donations be made in Rafe's name to CEDO . Other updates from the family are posted on Rafe Sagarin's Facebook page and at rafesagarin.com.
