SAVE the El Dorado Canal

Save the El Dorado Canal, is a group working to protect a 3 mile segment of a historic canal located in Pollock Pines, CA from being converted to a large pipe. 

This earthen canal was built in 1854 during the gold rush era and has become an integral part of the local ecosystem, a defining characteristic of the surrounding area, and central to the character of our community.

Your help is needed to save this valuable resource!

A legal defense fund has been set up to oppose this project. As a group we have already raised over $4500.00 outside of gofundme.


The local water utility, El Dorado Irrigation District (EID), has resorted to an exaggerated claim of water loss, from a 1970’s study to justify this project. This claim is being used to meet the mandated 20% water use reduction, (even though El Dorado County residents have more than exceeded reduction usage) opening the door for EID to receive more federal grants.

They are also eliciting fear in the community by claiming water quality degradation which is mostly unfounded and has been greatly exaggerated.

A core group has secured some funding to defend against EID’s actions to pipe the canal, but need your financial help with the overall legal cost.

Aside from the issues mentioned above, other concerns if the canal is piped:

• Loss of a firefighting resource

• More EID debt being generated for another unnecessary project. EID's last estimate is that over $5,000,000.00 will be paid by rate payers.

• Funding being used on this project could go where the need is greater

• Loss of a beautiful waterway, critical to a myriad of wildlife species and diverse plant community that lines its' banks.

• Loss of a vital El Dorado County gold rush cultural resource

Our goal is to attain $25,000 to fund a successful legal challenge to this proposed project under the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA).
