                                   Break The Chains

(1) "Domestic Violence is the leading cause of death of women”more than cancer, heart disease, and car accidents combined.

(2) Every 9 seconds a woman is assaulted or beaten or killed as a direct result of domestic abuse.

(3) Studies suggest that up to 10 million children witness some form of domestic violence annually.

(4) Men who as children witness their parents' physical altercations are twice as likely to abuse their own wives or partners, as those sons of non-violent parents.

(5) Nearly 1 in 5 teenage girls who have been in a relationship report that boyfriends /lovers had threatened violence or self-harm if presented with a breakup.

(6) Everyday in the US, more than three women are murdered by their husband or boyfriend or lover.

(7) Education and Escape is a door to freedom.

In 2008 Madam Walker Braidery (MWB) and friends adopted a domestic violence shelter (My Sister's Place) and began having small, successful fundraising events to help the residents.

The MWB Salon and friends decided to do this on a larger scale.  They decided to pay homage to Pioneers in the Natural hair and Braid industry that live up to the S.E.L.F. Image Awards (SIAF) mantra. Strength Equals Living Faith

The SIAF Board of Directors voted to name their major fundraiser, The S.E.L.F. Image Awards, an acronym for:
                             Strength Equals Living Faith.
This year The S.E.L.F. Image Awards goal is to Award SIX to TEN scholarships to individuals whose lives, aspiration and goals have been affected by the horror of domestic violelnce.  
Applicants must show a sincere desire to acquire skills as an entreprenure in the Natural Hair Care business.  They must prove financial need, fill out an application and submit an essay.  

The SIAF(a non-profit organization) will award grants to those individuals by vote of it's Board of Govenors.  

We are reaching out to YOU, the community for
help with your generous donations to prevent Domestic Violence, raise self-esteem and offer an empowering way to freedom for The Black Family thru education. 

The Pointer Sisters use to sing..."I know we can make it work, I know that we can make it if we try...Yes we can can, Yes we can can Why can't we if we want it? Yes we can can".

Although there are special 'perks' for those who donate $25 or more, whatever you can afford to give, can and will make a difference in the life of a victim or survivor of Domestic Violence.

Scholarship Awards, grants and honors will be presented at the 2015 S.E.L.F. Image Awards IV.

All future proceeds from this fundraiser will go directly to the S.E.L.F. Image Awards foundation to continue to bring awareness support and education to individuals and families at risk.
