Kathy Smedley passed away on 9/1/16 after a courageous 4-year battle with multiple myeloma. While losing her has been difficult, we know she would want to be remembered for what she did for others through her life-long avocation as a teacher.
Kathy graduated with a BS in Education from the University of California and an Master's Degree as a Reading Specialist from Bowie State University. During her 34-year teaching career, she recently retired from the McKeesport School District, where she had been a K-12 classroom teacher and Title I reading specialist, coach and facilitator. As a school leader and student advocate, she devoted her time and resources to many causes to help the less fortunate students in her school district. Her passion for learning influenced the lives of thousands of students over those 34 years, many of whom still stayed in contact in gratitude to what she did for them.
Kathy touched the lives of thousands of students and many stayed in contact with her. She looked forward to Halloween to lead the student parade and entertain the crowd wearing a drum major uniform with baton in hand! She organized many holiday gift drives for school children, personally collected monies, bought clothing and toys, and delivered them to the families’ homes. A friendly, outgoing person, she brought a smile to everyone she met, including many doctors, nurses and caregivers during her treatments.
Her example of what a teacher is sets a high bar to those who might want to follow in her footsteps. She would be gratified to know she could continue to make a positive impact. Her family would like to provide for a scholarship fund for students in the McKeesport School District who want to pursue a teaching career.
For all of those inspired by Kathy's enthusiasm and passion for education and reading, this is the opportunity to say thanks again by contributing to the Kathy Smedley Future Teacher Scholarship.
