ArtPrize 2013 Terry Brennan

It is that exciting time of year for me again....ArtPrize! If you know me or collect my work you are familiar with ArtPrize and the importance of this competition. If not here are the basics straight from artprize.org : "The ArtPrize event is a 19-day international art competition, open to any artist and decided by public vote, promoting critical dialogue and collaboration throughout the year. For nearly three weeks, three square miles of downtown Grand Rapids, Michigan become an open playing field. Art from around the world pops up in every inch of downtown, and it's all free and open to the pubic. It is so epic that Time Magazine called ArtPrize one of "Five Festive Events You Won't Want to Miss in 2013."
The top prize, which is decided by public vote, is $200,000. Additionally, a panel of international arts professionals decides a $100,000 Grand Juried Prize. All prizes combined total $560,000, creating the world's largest art competition."

This is my 4th year making the trip to ArtPrize in Grand Rapids, MI. Like every year before it takes your support to make it a success and I have had great results. In 2010 I finished in the Top 50, 2011 and 2012, Top 25 and my works was viewed by 300,00 plus visitors to ArtPrize each year.

I am looking for your help in funding this year's work and transportation to ArtPrize.

We also want to THANK our generous host that has allowed us to stay (take over) her home for the past 3 years. Without her this would not be possible!! She has invited us back this year! She charges us nothing and provides us a home base. She is now family!!


My installation this year is object driven, using my power as an artist to engage in social issues while not allowing my personal opinion to interfere with the viewer. Past installations have included sea life, the ocean, and large game animals, this year is about the human aspect of the world around me and the emotions created by viewing my work. I want each person to leave engaged in conversation.

The Nursery: Immaculate Perception
Shhh! Come closer. Let us watch the world sleep. As the cradle rocks, the soft movements accentuated by the stillness of slumber. Let us be perceivers, coming to observe logically but never objectively. We lay our own templates over our perceptions. We see things through a tunnel of our own creation. Come closer. Project yourself into the perception, reflect your own creation. Do not ignore the emotions created in the watching, swaddle them, nurse them and present them to the morning as the world wakes. Brennan will construct a two-wall, mixed media installation that deconstructs the natural roles of perception. On approach, the watcher feels the warmth, the comfort, the safety of an affluent baby nursery. But as the watcher draws closer, willful perceptions change as the realization settles, everything is covered with guns, made from destructive weapons. There are no politics, no judgments, only perceptions. Shhh! Come closer.
