Delissa's All Hands Project Nepal

On April 25th 2015, Nepal experienced a violent earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8. It was the second worst earthquake the country had endured since 1934. Then just a few weeks later, on May 12th, the country experienced yet another aftershock with a magnitude of 7.3.

Tragically, this earthquake has taken the lives of close to 9,000 people, injuring 23,000, and has also resulted in hundreds missing. Nepal is still considered to be one of the poorest countries in the world and when natural disasters like this happen, it can cripple the country for years. The Nepali people have been working tirelessly on trying to rebuild their already impoverished country and there have been recent reports fearing that seismic tensions continue to build, and another earthquake is imminent.

Two days after the initial earthquake, I submitted an application to help volunteer with All Hands, a non-profit organization helping communities who have been impacted by natural disasters. I first learned about All Hands after a close friend of mine volunteered with them last year in Bohol, Philippines. He explained it as a transformative experience and had encouraged me to volunteer if the opportunity ever presented itself.

I’m happy to say that time is now!

I was offered and have accepted to be a part of the volunteer team on Project Nepal with All Hands from October 1 to December 1 (with a possible extension). I will be working 6 days a week on various tasks which range from demolition of damaged structures to helping build temporary learning spaces for children.

Now, here’s where I need your help. The funds I’m trying to raise are to cover the costs incurred by All Hands for providing accommodations and meals for each volunteer (roughly $25 per day), and to help with my flight (RT $1,587) travel insurance ($269), and equipment costs ($270 - emergency tent, work boots, gloves, etc.). I’m also looking to do a film only photo project on my days off so any additional funds raised will be used to buy, develop and print photos.

In the weeks ahead, I will be setting up a site where I’ll be posting project updates, photos, and personal journal entries. Thank you to my family and friends for supporting me in this endeavor, and to my donors, namasté.

Check out All Hands to learn more about how they are helping communities across the globe.
