Dear readers,
my name is Tivi and I am from Germany. In November 2017 I went to Myanmar to obtain an own understanding of the current situation in the country related also to the muslim-buddhist-conflict and to volunteer in a Buddhist education centre. On the right side on the picture you can see me teaching English to local village children and on the left side is the venerable chief nun Sayalay Aggavati , who has studied at the gorgeous Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
During my stay I could personally see the education and instruction works been done so far. Two experiences had really touched my heart: One day I asked my student to write an essay about her dreams and her last words were “sometimes you have to give up a little happiness to get a much bigger happiness”. Her essay was full of social thoughts and many other students were literally great writers with wonderful messages. Another story was that my first student was an older man and he was a scientist. He wanted to learn English because he had discovered something in the field of astrology and his wishes were to be able to share his knowledge with the rest of the world. Unfortunately, he suffers under Diabetes and is not able anymore to continue his studies. Aggacara was for me not only a place for locals to obtain knowledge, I have seen international volunteers have changed in that place as well. Coming from an industrial world full of technology and no time made people forget the basic needs of life. Those volunteers me included have learned more about the nature with the work of gardening and we could reflect ourselves more deeply with the help of meditation and dhamma to reduce the materialistic craving in us and to get a tiny insight how to keep the balance of peace in our minds.

This centre was started in 2014 by Sayagyi Cala Theri from Malaysia and by Sayalay Aggavati from Myanmar and has been giving free education for 2 years now.
The PURPOSE of this fund-raising is to raise enough fund for a three-storey education building.
This building will provide free education and free nourishment for local children from the village and free accommodation for local staying nuns and volunteer teachers.
We have enough fund for the first storey which will function as dining hall and other activities. Currently is not enough fund for the second and third storey which will be the computer room, classrooms and library.
One storey is 30.000.000 MMK around 23,000 USD.
Objective:
1. To give free education to local children and nuns
2. To improve self-confidence and livelihoods
Education purpose:
1. Free English classes
2. Free meditation and Buddhism classes
3. Free Computer usage and lessons
Full Target:
1. 46,000 USD
2. to help 60 to 70 local children
3. to Support 10 to 20 nuns who come from poor
families, including orphans
BACKGROUND
Why do we need to support young nuns?
Aggacara is the pioneer in terms of nun education in Myanmar. In a Country with high Buddhist values Monks are getting much more Support than nuns. Nuns suffer in young age with a lack of education and elder nuns in retired age are suffering from homelessness and poverty. We are as an international pair of nuns unique and totally Independent from monks. We give free education such as the English language and the Dhamma, we also invite overseas nuns and overseas volunteer teachers to have a know-how-exchange. The teachers will teach them the right pronunciation as they are native speakers and the children are most interested to learn from foreign teachers as well.
Why do the girls ordain so young to be nuns or Sayalays in Myanmar? The reason lays in the current state of the social system in Myanmar, many children have no access to education or continuously nourishment, therefore we can provide them only free education, accommodation and food better when they stay as Sayalays. While staying as Sayalays, Burmese Buddhist people will donate according to the high spiritual, religious and moral values in the country. Thus, becoming a Sayalay or small nun will help them in their lives.
At the same time, we also give the chance for oversea volunteers to learn Dhamma and meditation in our place. They will learn about Insight meditation, loving-kindness meditation and the contemplation of death. We give them a variety of meditation techniques to develop the understanding, awareness and observation of their own minds. Foreigners, while staying few weeks in Aggacara, are able to see the world from another perspective and they are able to learn and appreciate Eastern and local Burmese culture as well.
Thus, admiring the ambitions and wishes of the two chief nuns, I would like to help them to raise the fund to build this three-storey education building.
