Helluva Theatre Company is dedicated to producing the finest plays of American and world literature and also developing the new work of playwrights working in that tradition.
Helluva Theatre Co. is now preparing to go into production for the World Premiere of The Husk by Jake Quinn. Jake, a retired NYC detective, has written a compelling story of three detectives tasked with identifying a young woman whose body was found frozen in an abandoned apartment. Who was she? Why was she there? What was she looking for? In searching for those answers each detective confronts questions of his own identity while laying bare their own troubled, haunted lives.
Excerpt from the script:
DOWD
It made me think, Frank...about those people in the morgue...the ones in the unclaimed room you toss back. What if you’re wrong? What if someone does care?
... we’re here and they’re not. Potter’s Field is a place, Frank, not a punishment. The dead don’t care where they’re placed; we do, that’s why we give them a chance of being buried with dignity.
FRANK
We? Speak for yourself.
DOWD
Just like that? You get to pick and choose who’s worthy of city burial based on one glance at a folder?
FRANK
They’re husk...and that folder is a score card...and yes I get to decide which case is worthy of an investigation.
DOWD

Helluva Theatre Company will be working with the New York Detectives' Endowment Association to donate 50% of the net-box office proceeds at the end of the production to the Widow's and Children's Fund. The Fund was created "to help support the families of those who died in the line of duty. The concept of the Fund dates back to the founding of the Union in 1917, at a time when the widows and children of slain Police Officers received very little assistance, and it was up to the Officer's colleagues to look after the welfare of the families of their fallen brothers. That protective spirit, bond, fraternity, and brotherhood still exists today amongst the members of New York's Finest."

BIOS:
Alex Dmitriev (Director)** has directed across the US, Canada and in London. He was Artistic Director of the Toronto Center for the Arts and the Associate Artistic Director of Canada's prestigious Manitoba Theatre Centre and was Resident Director at the North Carolina State Theatre for two seasons. Most recently, he directed Arthur Miller’s A View From The Bridge for Brave New World Repertory Theatre, the World Premier of Ken Jaworowski’s Believers for the Workshop Theater Company in New York. He has directed seven productions for York Theatre Company, including the Drama Desk-nominated production of Lost in the Stars, and critically acclaimed productions of Alan Ayckbourn's Taking Steps and How the Other Half Loves. Other work in New York includes Conor McPherson’s St. Nicholas for Irish Rep; Let Us Now Praise Famous Men for Village Theatre Company; Mrs. Warren's Profession for Pearl Theatre; and Bedtime Story for Actors Studio. Regionally, he has directed at Philadelphia Drama Guild, Virginia Stage Company, McCarter Theatre Company and Actors Theatre of Louisville among others. He directed Doonreagan, about Poet Laureate Ted Hughes and his mistress, Assia Wevill, at the Jermyn Street Theatre in London and the OFFIE nominated Straight To The Heart at the Arts Theatre Upstairs . For the Abingdon Theatre Company in New York he directed A Happy End by Iddo Netanyahu, the world premieres of Berilla Kerr's German Games and Evangeline and God, as well Barton Bishop’s Graduation Day and God’s Daughter. Alex is a member of the Stage Directors and Choreographers Society.
Jake Quinn is a retired NYPD detective, who served twenty one years with department. He was born and raised one of thirteen children in Brooklyn NY. His first play, The Husk, is set in Manhattan’s Lower East Side where he attended high school and started his police career. He began writing later in life while assigned at the Manhattan D.A.’s office when he says, “He had something to write about.” He has also written five screen plays.
