Support Syrian Refugees

Donation protected
My name is Alister Brown.

Nine months ago I changed my life to help change others, this is the next challenge; I need your help to change many more lives.

There are 80,000 refugees suffering in the city of Izmir in Turkey, fleeing war, ignored by governments and without official support from aid agencies. I am going to Izmir to help with the refugee crisis this November.

Izmir has taken much of the brunt of refugees fleeing war in Syria, not just from the illegal crossings refugees felt forced to take to safety in Europe, but those who have nowhere else to go.

These are people who receive no support at all from governments and they are left to fend for themselves in a country which is completely foreign to them. Because of this, it's been left to ordinary people like you and me to set up voluntary non-governmental organisations and give our time to help these refugees who have lost everything. The only help there is comes from people like you and me raising the funds to go and commit our time.

To put this into perspective, there are around 6,000 refugees in Calais, 57,000 Syrian refugees in Greece, and in the city of Izmir alone there are 80,000, from rural farm workers to doctors, architects and lawyers, widows and lone parents to children. The need is great and it is unbelievable that they are ignored and that the only support offered to these people is from volunteers who just want to help.

When I first heard about the issues in Turkey a few months ago from a friend, it planted a seed in my mind and I felt compelled to help change life for others. I've already made big changes in my life to help others, and this is an opportunity that I can not let go, in this time of great need for people fleeing the war in Syria.

I am going to join the not-for-profit & non-governmental organisation ReVi (click here for website) for 3 months. ReVi finds the refugees down the backstreets, and finds out who they are what their skills are, what they need, and meets their children. In tangible ways they support them to become self-sufficient and able to begin a new life. For example they found a tailor and bought him a sewing machine and his first materials, now he is training women with no other means of support to sew.

Once they found enough children they rented a two roomed house and opened a school, 15 children turned up on the first morning.

I have a link with this organisation through a friend, and her son is currently over in Turkey helping right now.

I'll be working full-time on a completely voluntary basis for the duration but, where there are no organisations, I need help in order for me to go to the frontline and support the refugees. I am expecting it to be very demanding for me personally but I am prepared and totally willing to be a small cog in helping those in so much need, and it will also be an immensely rewarding thing to do and an experience that will be life changing.

All the funds raised will allow me to help refugees in terrible circumstances, where the governments are turning a blind eye, by allowing me to travel to Izmir, stay in basic accommodation and eat one basic meal a day. In keeping my costs to a minimum more of your funds will go on supporting the work and the refugees directly.

It's from you to me directly to a refugee. This will then give me what is needed to put all of my efforts into supporting the refugees and helping them start a new life in Izmir. Until ultimately they can return to a safe home in Syria.

I can not wait to bring you the stories of the people I meet, and the life-changing work we do. Those who know me, know this is my passion and I will share it all online with you so you can be a part of it and see firsthand the work we are doing there and directly where your money is going.

I will be organising and hosting a fund-rasing coffee morning and pub night in Worcester, and I will also be taking part in the following events to help the cause:-

- Extreme North Quadrathon (4 Half Marathons in 4 days).

- Ben Nevis Braveheart Triathlon (1.2 mile swim - 56 mile bike - 13.1 mile run to Ben Nevis summit)

- Bournemouth Marathon

I am also donating £5 to this cause for every running garment that is sold on my Etsy page. (Click here for website)
