Arielle's Tropical Ecology Course

Donation protected
My name is Arielle and I am an 18-year-old junior at Bard College at Simon's Rock in Great Barrington, Massachusetts. I am majoring in Environmental and Sustainability Studies with a minor in Urban Studies.  At the end of this academic year I will have completed my senior thesis on the water crisis affecting the city of Flint, Michigan and will be preparing to complete a signature, one-year program at Vermont Law School to earn my Masters of Environmental Law and Policy while simultaneously earning my Bachelor's of Arts from Simon's Rock. I plan to become an Environmental Lawyer and lobby for international environmental policy changes because I believe that advocacy and protests only go so far without policy change to accompany it.

As part of my studies on the environment, there is a course called Tropical Ecology and Sustainability Studies that is a two credit, two- week, intensive, study abroad experience that includes an environmental study on the island of Montserrat; the tropical home to the Soufriere Hills volcano, a recently active volcano in the Caribbean. The island contains numerous rare plants and animals, including over 800 species of plants, 1,240 invertebrates, and at least two critically endangered species found nowhere else in the world ( http://simons-rock.edu/academics/program-overview/ecology-and-sustainability-studies-in-montserrat.php). From January 6th- January 19th, 2017 I will be taught by professors from my campus, and residents of the island on sustainability, tropical ecology, marine biology, geophysics and more.

The total cost for the course is $4000, which I cannot afford. I have saved just over 1000.00 for this incredible opportunity to take this course which includes two 300-level science credits, room and board, food, round-trip transportation including the ferry ride from Antigua to the island of Monserrat, supplies needed for course activities and completion including a wet suit, snorkeling supplies, goggles and more.

With your financial help I will be able to take this course, complete this program, earn my Bachelor's degree a year early, and complete the 1- year program at Vermont Law School simultaneously. All of which will enhance my law school application, and my knowledge considerably as I continue my studies and pursue my JD with the express purpose of becoming an International Environmental lawyer. Please help me make my dream a reality. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your help and support!
