A NEW YARN SHOP IS COMING TO SOUTH JERSEY!
Rachel and Stevie Franklin are a Mother & Daughter-in-law team who have a passion for yarn, fiber arts, and teaching. With over 40 years of combined experience, and constantly staying in touch with the latest trends of the yarn-crafting community, this is not your Grandma’s yarn shop. Although she’s more than welcome too! We’re confident that we’ll be able to get you started on your next project, whether you’ve been knitting forever like we have or have been deemed “unteachable” by your Great Aunt Norma. No offense Aunt Norma, but you’ve never had a lesson with us, and I bet we could teach you a few new things too.
NOT ANOTHER BIG BOX STORE
Are you tired of walking into your local craft store, excited to start your next knit or crochet project, only to be dismayed by the abysmal choices of scratchy acrylic in bizarre colors, itchy wool, and balls of the latest “trendy” yarn, more fitted for the creation of a furry monster puppets than anything wearable on the human body?
So you ask a nearby sales associate for some assistance. If you aren’t immediately greeted by, “Umm, that’s like, not my department. Let me find someone else.” Congratulations, you’ve already made progress. You ask the helpful associate for some guidance. You are trying to substitute a fancy expensive yarn for something a little more in your budget, but you’re thrown off by the wording of the gauge…
“I’m sorry,” says the helpful sales associate, “I don’t [insert craft here]. I just stock the shelves.”
You sigh, overwhelmed and frustrated, and thank them for their help, but leave empty handed, dreams dashed, and project unstarted.
Sound familiar?
Enter A String Thing.
A place where all your crafty dreams come true!
WHY WE NEED YOUR HELP
Imagine you walk into a dark room that you’ve never been in before. The first thing most people try to do is turn on the light, but you can’t find the light switch. You bump into things, and maybe knock something over. It sounded like a lamp.
Suddenly, someone turns on the light for you, and now you can see the room. (It was a lamp, by the way.) You can see the path through the room and can navigate it easily. Just watch out for the lamp pieces.
A String Thing wants to turn on the light for your yarn crafting needs. Whether you are just getting started, or have been crafting for decades, we want to help you discover new things, brush up on old things, and just have fun. We offer our customers their favorite yarns, and maybe some new ones. We might introduce you to your new favorite needles or hook. Maybe you want to expand your skills or take a class. Stuck on part of the pattern that doesn’t seem to make sense? Stop by, we’re happy to help. We want to provide a comfortable place for yarn crafters to gather and build a community, but we also want to give back to our community.
We want to make the world a better place, one stitch at a time.
But we need your help to turn on the lights. Literally.
CAN YOU REALLY CHANGE THE WORLD?
You bet your boots we can! And, we have the science to prove it. Science, I tell you! SCIENCE!
Yes, there is actual medical and scientific evidence that knitting and stitching can help with long term diseases and illnesses such as chronic pain, depression, addiction, stress, and even dementia. This is our favorite reference {http://www.stitchlinks.com/your_health_matters.html }, but there are so many more. Not only have we experienced this in our own lives, but we’ve seen it in our students as well. We’ve worked with a woman in an assisted living home with severe memory problems. After just a few months of weekly visits with us, her nurses reported how much better she was doing in other areas of her life. We’ve worked with a lady who suffers from Alzheimer’s who, when we started, couldn’t remember how to knit. Within 6 classes, she no longer felt the need to ask if she was doing things correctly and was producing beautiful stitches as if she had never forgotten.
But it’s not just all about the science. We also plan to work with the community around us, encouraging projects to be donated to those in need right next door. Blankets for babies in the NICU, hats for the homeless, whatever we can do to reach out and show our community a little love. A little love can go a long way in making the world a better place, and what better place to start than right here?
We also want to reach out to local groups, such as Girl and Boy Scout troops, local YMCA and Community Centers, even corporate groups, to help bring a little crafty relaxation into your lives. We want to have Men’s Night, because yes, men knit and crochet too. I’ve heard of some pretty bad dudes in Brazil who crochet to get time off their prison sentence. If they can do it, you can do it.
WHY A YARN SHOP?
Yarn-crafting is not just a solitary activity. In fact, it’s more commonly a community-building activity. It’s grown from shepherds knitting in the fields, to the knitting guilds of the Renaissance, all the way through the Craft Yarn Council of America to your local crafty gatherings and Stitch-and-Bitch nights. We even have a World-Wide-Knit-In-Public-Day (which totally accepts crocheters too)!
We want to be able to provide a safe, friendly environment, for crafters of all ages and skill levels, to feel welcome and wanted, to come and enrich their lives, enhance their skills, and expand their horizons with people they may not normally associate. The teenager sitting with a woman old enough to be her grandma, both working on a scarf for someone they love. Two young ladies from very different walks of life, both knitting baby sweaters for a friend. Two middle aged people, one male and one female, working on beautiful lace shawls for their mothers. Could we host crafting circles at other places? Yes, we could, but being able to host directly from the shop offers a much wider bank of resources than say, a bookstore, or the library.
There’s a whole history of why knitting and crochet is awesome, but you can check that out on our blog. {Watch for updates with a handy link.}
WHAT DO YOU GET OUT OF THIS?
Because we all know that, despite your kindness and generosity, you want something back for helping us out. We know that. No one’s judging you. So Check out our list!
