My name is Rackim Ramsey I'm 22 years old
I was born to a mother who was an addict. When I was five years old she left me, my older sister, and my baby brother on the the street corner in the middle of the night and I never saw her again...... I was raised in an inner city environment where there were drugs,violence and I had to make a choice for my future
A small youth circus school opened up around the corner from my house in uptown Chicago when I was 12 years old. I was offered enrollment at no charge. I was so excited to learn skills and have a safe place to go. Being a performer had been a dream of mine since I was a young child. I worked hard at this program every day after school and soon I was mastering aerial hoop, contortion and floor acrobatics. My life was changing direction. One day I saw a Cirque du Soleil show and after seeing that performance I knew that circus was my passion. It was going to transform my life.
I auditioned for one of the best circus schools in the world. I tried out for 4 consecutive years each time making it to the final cut but I never got accepted. Maybe there was something bigger in my future? I kept working at perfecting my skills. I would not give up. This past year I got the chance to audition for Codarts University in Rotterdam, Holland for their circus department and I got ACCEPTED. I just finished my first year and I could not be happier. It was the best year of my life. I am currently working at two different jobs and doing what I have to do to get back to Codarts in the fall. I have faced many obstacles in my life and overcame them to get to where I am today. I want to be the 1st in my family to graduate from college and pursue a career in Circus Performing Arts
