A Welcome, But Expensive Surprise

Five years ago, my wife (Jenny) and I tried starting a family. Things did not go as planned, so we started with fertility treatments. We were hopeful at the prospects of at least one of the treatments being successful, but alas, after three IUI visits and four cycles of IVF treatments, we reluctantly decided to start the adoption process.


Just after Christmas 2013, we were matched with a wonderfully awesome birth mother that we became very friendly with. Jump to May of 2014 and we were blessed with a happy and healthy baby daughter.


Around the time our daughter reached three months of age, Jenny and I started discussing whether or not we'd ever adopt again (yes, we are excessive planners). The concern was that because we had such a great experience with our birth mother, that it would be difficult to start the whole process all over again with a whole new birth mother and a whole different set of circumstances and uncertainties.


To our surprise, our daughter's birth mother is with child again. She called us last evening to tell us the news and to ask if we would consider adopting again.


The long and the short of it is that we are more than interested in adopting with her as the birth mother again; not only because we would like to expand our family, but also because if she is looking to place the baby, we want our daughter's brother or sister to live with her and not have them separated.

We are a middle-class family with the financial means and more than enough love with which to raise another child. However, due to the expenses of the fertility treatments and our previous adoption, we do not have the up-front funds to undertake such an expensive endeavor at this time.
