Baby Cameron, born w/ Gastroschisis
Donation protected
Gastroschisis is a birth defect in which an infant's intestines are outside of the body at birth because of a hole in the abdominal wall. The child's intestines usually stick out (protrude) through the hole.
Treatment for baby Cameron, include nutrients by IV and antibiotics to prevent infection. The baby's temperature must be carefully controlled, because the exposed intestine allows a lot of body heat to escape. which is what you see in the posted pictures which were taken shortly after birth.
Baby Cameron's mother Liesha, is anxious for him to
come home and wants to be able to nurture him during his first 3-6 months; before returning to work. She is eligible for FMLA and childcare leave, but she will not be paid.
Treatment for gastroschisis is surgery to repair the defect. A surgeon will put the bowel back into the abdomen and close the defect, if possible. If the abdominal cavity is too small, a mesh sack is stitched around the borders of the defect and the edges of the defect are pulled up. The sack is referred to as a silo. With growth, the herniated intestine returns into the abdominal cavity and the defect can be closed.
Other treatments for the baby include nutrients by IV and antibiotics to prevent infection. The baby's temperature must be carefully controlled, because the exposed intestine allows a lot of body heat to escape. which is what you see in the posted pictures which were taken shortly after birth 3 weeks ago as of 11/19/2014.
Baby Cameron, has recently had the surgery and is recovering nicely, his mother Liesha, ensures that he has breast milk to assist in building his immune system. She was advised that he will be able to come home when he is on full feeds (40 ml) currently as of Sunday he is only taking in 5ml, but hopefully in 2-8weeks he will be home.
Liesha, currently supports her 3 older children and maintains her apartment by working full time, without support from family since she grew up in a foster home until she aged out. Baby Cameron and his siblings are the only true family she has. Liesha, after having a C-section returned to work less than a week after having Baby Cameron, because she wants to save her leave and money to enable her to take maternity leave when he is discharged from the NICU (neonatal ICU).
After discharge from the hospital, Baby Cameron, has a small risk for developing bowel obstruction due to scar tissue or a kink in a loop of bowel. Symptoms of bowel obstruction include: 1) bilious (green) vomiting, 2) a bloated stomach, and 3) no interest in feeding. This is an additional reason she wants to be home with him, and ensure that she has the proper childcare providers in place when she returns to work.
