Bay City Police Department K9 Fund

On Tuesday, January 3, 2017, at around 10:00 p.m., Officer Keith Hatton contacted the police department to request assistance locating his K9 Partner Kim. Kim had escaped from her enclosure and was missing.

On New Year’s, all the fireworks in the area, upset Kim. She was highly agitated and climbed a six foot fence to find her way to the front door of Officer Hatton’s residence. Officer Hatton let Kim in for the night to help keep her calm.

It is believed on January 3rd, since she had discovered she could get out, she once again climbed the fence to go out and explore. That night, available officers assisted in trying to locate Kim. Approximately an hour later, Officer Marino Chavez observed a vehicle pulled over near the roadway. As he approached the area, he observed the vehicle had struck a dog.

Officer Chavez made contact with the subject on location who told him the dog ran out in front of him and he did not have time to stop. The dog was confirmed to be K9 Officer Kim and she was deceased.

Kim will be greatly missed. As police officers, the day in – day out working together under stressful situations builds a family relationship with all officers. Kim was a part of the family here at Bay City Police Department.

Animal Control Officer Dottie Grandstaff described K9 Kim saying, “Kim had two personalities. She had her off-duty, playful personality and she had her on-duty personality. When Kim was on-duty, she was all business.” K9 Kim knew when it was time to work and just like every officer on the force, she took her job seriously.

Unlike some working K9’s, Kim was approachable.

Happy Radio 92.5 is looking for your help in raising the Funds Needed to replace Kim with a New K9 Officer. These K9's are trained to serve in the line of duty. And are very helpful in protecting our officers and our community.  We are working with a Local K9 Company that is helping us reduce the cost of purchasing one of these great K9's.

We are very greatful for your help and donation in this time of need. Officer Keith Hatton and Kim were partners on patrol and our hearts go out to him for his loss. But you can make the healing process progress with a donation in any amount to help Officer Hatton get his new partner,so that they can continue to protect and serve our community.

Thank you!!
