Bicycling to Restore Sight

Tax deductible
“Cataracts are the leading cause of blindness worldwide, accounting for half of the world's 40 million blind (in the developing countries)”, according to the National Institutes of Health – NIH https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19785217.  Hopeful Ways funds sight-restoring cataract surgeries to the poor for only $150 per surgery. All eligible patients have late stage cataracts and are essentially blind. An all-volunteer group of surgical and support staff provide the manpower, and all services are free to cataract patients. The $150 covers the cost of medications, supplies and patients logistics (transportation, food and lodging).

To raise awareness of this urgent need and to fund future surgeries, Jim Carlins is bicycling the Erie Canal Towpath from Albany to his home in Amherst -- a 7 day journey (rain or shine) of over 300 miles. Jim will be camping along the trail and be accompanied by 2 other bicyclists, but no support staff.  All expenses for the journey are paid by the bicyclists so that all money raised goes directly towards eye surgeries.

The bicycling-camping journey begins Wednesday September 12 and continues through Tuesday September 18.  Jim will post daily updates during the trip, as wifi and/or cellular connectivity permits.

The goal is $3,000 – enough to restore sight for 20 people – and create a miracle for each recipient.

Please consider donating to this worthwhile cause and give the “Gift of Sight” to a blind individual. No amount is too small. Sight restoration is a wonderful and personal gift that can be given through a small donation.

Also please spread the work by sharing this appeal with you family and friends, so that others may help people see again.

Jim Carlins is President of Hopeful Ways (www.hopefulways.org, https://www.facebook.com/hopefulwaysorg/), an all-volunteer 501c3 non-profit that funds cataract surgeries for the poor in Nicaragua, the second poorest country in the Western Hemisphere after Haiti. Jim is also a member of the Pendleton NY Lions Club (https://pnylc.org/).

Thank you for your consideration and support.
