Bintumani Kilimanjaro Adventure

My name is Alieu Fofanah  and two years ago I made a decision to spend the rest of my life trying to create positive change in Africa. Spending months pitching for funding in Silicon Valley for a startup I was working on, and watching entrepreneurs building solutions to the world’s biggest problems, got me thinking about whose problems did I want to spend my life solving.

That trip inspired me to return to my home country Sierra Leone, to find out first hand what needed to be done. Fuelled by the desire to figure out where I might fit into the solution, I brought together some like-minded people to launch GoGetters  - an entrepreneurial community who also wanted to empower change in Africa. Together we ventured across South Africa, Kenya, Rwanda, Nigeria, Ghana and Sierra Leone for 6 months, exploring the start-up scene which included organising 3 entrepreneurship workshops, filming 3 documentaries and launching a sugar drinks business in Freetown, Sierra Leone  .

Two years later and the vision to help create change in Africa has only deepened. This time I’ll be climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa and the world’s tallest freestanding mountain, to raise funds for the Bridging Bintumani project in Sierra Leone.

Mount Bintumani is the highest peak in West Africa and has incredible potential for tourism, and is widely known for its beautiful landscape and lush mountains.

At the moment, it is extremely difficult to reach Bintumani Mountain, (access is limited to the rope bridge shown in my display picture)  but a collective of people are raising money to build a bridge to open access to the peak of the mountain which will undoubtedly attract  visitors, tourists and lovers of nature to Sierra Leone, improve the living standards of the people living around the Bintumani Mountain area.

The entire project will cost over £1 million to build, with over £90k raised so far by the collective efforts of these different groups. My personal pledge is to add to this by raising £8,000 by the 29th December 2015, the same day the project officially launches and the same day I begin my climb to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Building this bridge will show the world what can be achieved when people work together for a brighter future and it will serve as a story for the people of Sierra Leone to remember and be proud of.

Your sponsorship donations can help to make this project a reality. It can and will be achieved through our collective efforts- as Nelson Mandela once said, "It always seems impossible until it is done!" To which I say, "If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together".

My flights and accommodation have all been paid for. £2,000 of the funds raised will go towards Mt Kilimanjaro guides, safety equipment and service fees. All the remainder funds raised will go to the Bridging Binutmani project.

If you're not comfortable donating online, are interested in joining the climb, or would like to ask me about anything at all, you can reach me at alieu@go-getters.co.uk.
