Leigh's Moving Fund!

Donation protected
After 5 years together, my now ex-boyfriend has decided that he no longer wants to be with me. Yes, it sucks. Yes, I’m obviously upset by this. No, I don’t want a pity party. This was done out of the complete blue so I have nothing saved. All of my money has been going towards my student loans. I have $46 in my checking account right now.

What I need is help. I’m stuck in the crapiest city in the crapiest state (in my opinion, of course). Right now I’m trying to find a place to live in my hometown, 900 miles cross-country from where I currently am, and a job in the surrounding area. Right now I have no car, no job, no place to live. All I have is my winning charm, a friendly cat and enough yarn to choke a whole passel of horses.

As I’ve already mentioned, I have very little money saved and student loans that are being more than a little difficult. (Study the hard sciences, kids.) The moving truck and money for gas have already been arranged but I still need money for things once I get moved such as an apartment, groceries, utilities, etc. Moving is expensive, no matter how you go about it, even more so when you are absolutely broke.

So here is my pitch.

What do you get?

Great question! Aside from helping a really broke woman stuck in a state she hates and who is just trying to get back home, you’ll also be helping out animals.

“How?” I hear you asking

For every $5 donated to my moving fund, I will crochet and/or knit one blanket square. The resulting squares will be made in to various blankets and then the blankets will be donated to a local animal shelter.

So…do what now?

You give me money, I make blankets, puppies and kitties benefit along with me. Everyone gets that warm and fuzzy feeling.

I have a lot, A LOT of yarn being a knitter and general crafter, and while I am waiting in limbo, the least I can do is craft. Elizabeth Zimmermann said it best: “Properly practiced, knitting soothes the troubled spirit, and it doesn't hurt the untroubled spirit either.” What better to do with stressed, troubled hands than to make something to help others?

That’s my plan. While I’m saving money at my current job and packing and waiting to make the move, I plan on making these squares and blankets so that they can be donated to a local animal shelter.

The specifics

• I plan on being on the road with my cat in tow by September 15th, earlier if I can manage it.

• The blanket squares will be 6”x6”. The blankets themselves will be 24”x24” which are perfect for puppies, kitties, ferrets or any other animal that needs a bit of comfort. Blankets provide warmth and comfort for stressed out animals. Also having something that smells familiar helps them adjust. Once the blankets are completed, pictures of them will be posted. I will also post pictures of them being donated to the local shelter.

• “What if you get, like, a million dollars?” If I am given more money than I immediately need, it will go towards upcoming bills, like the aforementioned dreaded student loans, or other utilities. I also have a cat and while he doesn’t eat much, he does eat and will need food. If someone is INCREDIBLY generous, the money will go towards a car or some other vehicle so that I can more comfortably and reliably get to and from said job that I will hopefully get.

• I WILL STILL MAKE THE BLANKET SQUARES/BLANKETS. Even if I am given $1 million, I will then make 200,000 squares and 12,500 blankets and the local animal shelter will be well outfitted. It might take me a while, but dammit, I’ll do it. I might have to buy more yarn, but that will come out of my pocket. The great thing about puppies and kitties is that they don’t care if their blankets are made from merino wool or Red Heart Super Saver.

If you can’t donate money right now, please consider passing along the link and sharing with friends and family. Trust me, I have been there but it doesn’t take a whole lot of time to share with your Twitter feed or Facebook friends or your Google+ circles and every shared link helps a little bit.

So please, dear reader, consider donating or sharing the link. By donating, you’re not only helping me but also animals in shelters who need a bit of comfort too. It’s a win/win/win.

And seriously, I just want to go home.
