BooksonBuses! Share reading w/kids!

Donation protected
The students in our children's literature class at Roanoke College are teaming up with the Roanoke City Library to put free children's books on public buses!

We've organized a valley-wide drive to collect new and gently used children's books for Roanoke's Books on Buses initiative. In addition, we're raising funds to purchase new books for the program.

If we can spark a love of reading in children (especially those in under-served communities), we can make a significant, long-term impact on a child's ability to succeed in school and in life.

And by donating, so can you!

While a child from a middle income family may have a dozen or more books in their personal library, poorer communities may have only one book for every 300 children

By donating free, age-appropriate books to families on the Roanoke City buses, we offer reading opportunities for children who may not have adequate access to books in their homes.

Last summer, Roanoke City rolled out the first wave of their Books on Buses program with packets containing over 300 books.  Within three days, they were all gone. Since June, they've distributed over 1000 books through the program.

It's clear there's a genuine need for children's books in this community, and we are excited that we can help meet that need.

A new study indicates that the brain activity of young children who are regularly read to is much more visually focused than those who lack regular co-reading experiences. Such visualization suggests deeper engagement and understanding on the part of children who routinely participate in reading.

Reading aloud to children for fifteen minutes a day--the length of an average bus commute--has a phenomenal impact on a child's quality of life and school preparedness

Similarly, developing a literate home environment not only encourages special family-time for shared reading, but also has long-term implications for academic success

By donating, you can share a book (or ten!) with children in the Roanoke area--and help get them on track to a love of reading and a brighter future!
