Winter is Coming to Brick House!
Donation protected
Hello! We are the Brick and Mortar Collective and we need your help to raise the necessary funds to turn this duplex on Detroit's Eastside into a community resource. Our goal is for this house to be an affordable space to live, while fostering community outreach and dialogue on social justice issues. Our group was formed in 2014 and collectively we have over a decade of cooperative experience, both in Detroit and through the ICC system in Ann Arbor. Our goal of $15,000 reflects a significant portion of the repair costs and we work every week to push the house towards being a habitable and inviting space. Currently we average six members but once the new house is complete we will have room for almost twice that!
Values
Our goal is not simply to live cheaply in Detroit. Our goal is to be a part of Detroit, as most of us grew up in Michigan.
We value art, education, and experience. Each year our library grows via generous donations and members' contributions. Group discussions on politics are commonplace and we seek to push ourselves and encourage one another to be better people everyday.
Necessary Repairs
With 7,000 sq feet, the house could one day house twelve people, but before this can happen, we need to build the major systems of the house.
- full electrical installation (Halfway completed!)
- renovation of kitchen
-renovation of 2nd bathroom (one half-bath already complete!)
- heating repairs and system installation
- window damages and weatherization
- aesthetic and insulation repairs to brick walls
-wood floor restoration (largely completed!)
Long Term Goals
Long term we hope to expand the role of the co-operative. Assuming all goes well and the house continues to be a financially stable space, we’d like to explore ways to leverage property ownership to positively support our community. We’ve discussed potentially using the equity in the home to create a community fund and opening the house up to other organizations as needed.
Thanks for considering being a supporter!
