Vista College Prep
In 2015, thirty-six first and second graders at Vista College Preparatory in Phoenix learned the basics of drumming and playing in ensemble from dedicated instructors through the first ever REACH Bucket Band.
The REACH Bucket Band has continued to grow in size and scope, and in 2016, a movement component was added to the curriculum, using stepping as an additional way to explore rhythm, coordination and ensemble.
The program, which takes place after school, uses music to teach students Vista College Prep’s core values of Respect, Enthusiasm, Achievement, Courage and Hard Work.
Learning to play music takes athletic-like focus, practice and determination. Our mission is to empower participants to learn about creativity, patience, tenacity, grit and determination while making music in a fun environment.
It may seem like a bunch of upside down buckets but the reality is, these kids are not just developing music skills - they are developing skills for life.
About The Leading Tone
Instruction of the REACH Bucket Band is conducted by The Leading Tone (TLT). TLT is a musical term and now a local non-profit project founded by The Phoenix Symphony principal clarinetist, Alex Laing.
In music, it's the seventh degree of a scale - think 'Do, Re, Mi' from The Sound of Music. In the song, 'ti' (pronounced 'tea') is 'a drink with jam and bread' but 'ti' is also the leading tone - as the song says, it brings us back to 'do', our home note, now an octave higher. The name of this project seeks to evoke that idea. The program uses music to help young people develop skills to lead themselves.
