Dr. John Marshall, Chief of Surgery at the Spokane VA Medical Center, checked into the Central YMCA at 5:19 AM on Monday, January 25th.  After working out in the weight room, he left the South exit for a 20 minute run at 5:33 AM.  He had only an iPod.  Car, ID, keys, wallet, phone, clothes for work, and coffee cup were all left at the YMCA.  He didn't return.

After 3 calls to Crime Check, 4 citizen-led search parties, and finally a call to local news, Spokane Police responded at 3:29 PM.  Spokane citizens continued to search the banks of the Spokane River, Centennial Trail, and Riverfront Park into the night.  The following morning, a fellow runner actively searching for John, spotted his body  across from Glover Field in the Spokane River.

After a two-month investigation into John's death, Spokane Police do not have a single scenario of how or where John entered the water and drowned.  His pattern of injury is consistent with assault while he was still alive.

An outside investigation is underway, and 50 hours at $5000 increments are what it will take to find the answers.  John often repeated a Marine Corps motto, "Your overconfidence will be your downfall."  Riverfront Park and Centennial Trail are familiar to all of us in Spokane.  We need an objective review of their safety.

For tips about John's death, please call [phone redacted].

Thank you,
Suzan, Liam and Elle Marshall
