Help Bona Vista Rebuild!

Donation protected
For over five decades Bona Vista Programs has been a beacon of hope for families and individuals throughout North Central Indiana. Unfortunately, in November 2013 a natural disaster hit the community hard and among the destruction of the tornado was a building donated by the Hinkle family. The building was originally transformed into the Imagine That! Innovation Center, a space to provide services to children and adults with special needs and families within the community.

The age old saying When life gives you lemons, make lemonade is exactly what the organization has set out to accomplish. The building is much more than walls and a roof. It’s a tribute to the people Bona Vista provides services to on a daily basis. The new building has been designed to accommodate the Bona Vista Community Connections Program. Community Connections is an adult day program with over thirty individuals who are physically unable to care for themselves. Some cannot feed themselves independently, toilet themselves alone or socialize without close supervision due to their physical and intellectual limitations. The program receives minimal governmental funding and is entirely dependent on the community partners for its financial support.

The building was insured but the insurance proceeds are not enough to rebuild the replacement structure. The construction of a $1.1 million building project that can accommodate the many unique requirements of a facility designed for intellectually, developmentally delayed, and physically challenged individuals will cost significantly more than the insurance proceeds. Hallways wide enough for wheelchairs and adaptive equipment to pass side by side as adults are transitioning from room to room, seven bathrooms large enough for staff and the individual to maintain privacy while toileting, and rooms furnished with exercise and sensory integration equipment are all necessary to provide individuals with a meaningful day they deserve.

In addition to day programs, the Innovation Center will host a variety of trainings, family engagement activities, and community events in the evenings and on the weekends. Trainings and educational seminars will include topics such as challenging behaviors, The Autism Spectrum, sensory integration, and mental illness. The new facility will brighten the corner of Plate and Hoffer Street and bring life back to an empty lot. The staff at Bona Vista and most importantly, the people receiving services, deserve to have a wonderful space where each step they take is another step toward reaching their maximum potential.
