Ryan & Oscar's appeal

I am running the Glencoe mountain marathon on Sunday 5 October 2014. Please read the following stories about Ryan and Oscar, two inspirational young boys, who we want to help by raising much needed funds to make their lives a little bit easier. Thank you.  Alan MacInnes x (you can also follow my blog to see how my training is going at http://balance.co.uk/blog)

RYAN's STORY

Ryan is a 12 year old boy who experiences and overcomes many challenges every day. Ryan is non-verbal and finds communicating his needs and desires difficult. He is also an intelligent boy who gets frustrated as his mind is locked inside a body that won’t let him interact and communicate with the world around him.

Ryan’s journey began with a difficult and traumatic birth. An emergency procedure left Ryan with facial palsy and ongoing cerebral difficulties. At the age of 3 Ryan was officially diagnosed with Autism, a blanket diagnosis as his condition includes many complex and overlapping factors. Within this diagnosis of Autism there are individual conditions Ryan copes with, including dyspraxia, ADHD, and hemiplegia, a form of cerebal palsy.

Ryan has numerous physical difficulties and his partial paralysis of his right side makes everyday activites and movements a challenge. He finds many day to day tasks extremely hard to do due to his overwhelming sensory issues.

Despite all of this he faces most days with a smile and a rare determination to join the world. We are constantly searching for ways to help him to do this.  Ryan loves music (The Beatles and Johnny Cash wrestle for airtime with Avicii and Taylor Swift) and he loves swimming and generally messing about. He lives at home with his Mum, Dad and little sister and loves when people come to visit. He is an inspiration to those he meets.  Any donation given would be put towards helping Ryan communicate through the use of specialist hi tech equipment. This is an area that has seen massive development in the past few years allowing children with no voice to enter more into the world we all take for granted.

Thank you for the taking the time to read about our special son.

OSCAR's STORY

Oscar is a fun loving, sociable and adorable little four year old. Unfortunately he has polymicrogyria, which means his brain hasn't developed normally. As a result he has swallowing difficulties, doesn't speak and can't walk. Oscar also has cerebral palsy. However, what Oscar lacks in abilities, he more than makes up for in personality. He loves being out and about and being the centre of attention. People often hear Oscar before seeing him as he's usually laughing his head off or squealing with delight at something! Oscar is also a bit of a speed freak and his mum and dad would love to get him a specially adapted bike. This would mean he could join in with Mum, Dad and big sister, Lucy, on their bikes, instead of watching from the sidelines in his buggy. He would get a huge thrill from this and we'd get an even bigger thrill from seeing him enjoying the ride with his family. These bikes are tailor made to suit each child's individual needs and as such, carry a hefty price tag.
