One Year after OUR house burned.

Has it really been one year since the fire?

Just a couple of days ago I was thinking about how people get through bad events in their lives and recalled my own personal misfortune.

It feels like the fire was at least five years ago, but the date of July 15, 2013 is burned into my memory (witticism intended).

My recollection of those first weeks after the fire seems both intense and blurry. The moments of the fire were so many – months of traveling around in hotels – by way of the lovely people at the Red Cross, Los Angeles. Rebuilding the house (the owner illegally constructed the property without the city’s permission), meticulous listing and pricing of personal property, restoring a household, and insurance paperwork, moving back and forth.

The impact on my daily life was so devastating that surely it must have been 4-5 years, right?

Perhaps the house fire seems so long ago because we’ve literally moved away from it all.

So how are things going one year after the fact, you might ask?

I’m happy to report that we’re all doing fairly well, even very well in some aspects.

The new neighborhood we moved to, is in South Los Angeles, 90044- a neighborhood with a distinct personality. ‘In-between’ some call it, though we prefer ‘up and down.’ I can get downtown in ten minutes and I’m slowly but surely discovering new shops and restaurants in a new part of town. I’ve gained a good friend a few houses down and started to introduce our family to more neighbors. The only negative with this neighborhood is the high crime rate, my brother has lost many friends in 2014 than most people have lost in a lifetime. Prostitution is at an all-time high- Friday, and Saturdays especially, I am thinking about my 13 year old sister and how easily influenced a tween mind can be at times of distress.

My family and I sincerely need a house, so that our family can continue to grow and be well!

Thank You World.

Best Regards,
