Chicago Advocate Legal is a non-profit law firm dedicated to providing affordable legal services to those in need. Many of our clients make too much money to qualify for free legal aid services, or their legal issues fall outside legal aid's case acceptance requirements. On the other hand, these clients cannot afford traditional legal services.
Chicago Advocate Legal takes into account income and household size to determine an affordable flat fee or contingency rate for each client. We do this across all sections of our firm, including for family, housing, consumer and criminal matters.
In an effort to keep prices affordable and overhead low we are seeking assistance in three major areas:
1. 501(c)(3) Tax Exempt Status
Obtaining tax exempt status will allow us to receive grant funding, tax-deductible donations, and software donations, and to provide internship opportunities to law students for class credit.
2. Technology
As a growing firm, updated technological resources would enable us to better service our clients. Essential items include: a) a desktop computer for the office, b) secure servers for storing client information, and c) cell phones and other software to allow staff to work remotely.
3. Filing Fees and Transportation
Due to our clients' socioeconomic status, many of them cannot afford filing fees. This creates a barrier to entry into the court system. Many of our clients also have trouble getting bus, train, or other forms of transportation to get to our office and to court.
Your seed money will be used to help hundreds of people get access to justice.
