For girls ages15-18 years old to participate in fire related activities:
OUR MISSION
Is to introduce young women to the fire service by:
providing hands on experience in a positive, team building environment while encouraging and supporting self confidence and a can do work ethic.
PURPOSE
Currently, in the state of California women represent less than 5% of the firefighting work force. So, when we (female firefighters) visit schools, many girls are surprised to see us as uniformed firefighters, and they ask how they can become firefighters too. It is evident that girls are interested in the fire service, yet the opportunity has gone unrealized for many of them, due to low female representation. Last year we piloted California’s first firefighter camp for girls.
Our Core Cadre is 7 professional female firefighters who donate time to chaperone and mentor the campers during a 4 ½ day, 4 night camp. Lodging and breakfast is on Cal Poly Campus where our campers experience a collegiate environment. The protective gear, engines and equipment is provided by Cal Fire/San Luis Obispo County Fire Department. Our training sites are various fire stations in San Luis Obispo County. Additional fire personnel are men and women volunteering their time to help Camp Cinder be successful and fun.
Camp Cinder 2014 was a huge success with a full roster of 18 girls and a waiting list for 2015. Three of our campers applied for firefighter jobs when they graduated from High School. We achieved our goal to reach youth at-risk and promote socio-economic diversity by presenting Camp Cinder to traditional high schools, Continuation High Schools and Home-School Programs. With your help, we can continue to provide Camp Cinder at no cost to the campers or their families.
