Canadian Performance Opportunity

We have some huge news for you all and hope you can be part of the journey even further. This news is going to be a first for us and we’ve been hanging out to tell you.

We have been selected to head overseas to perform in Canada at the XXIV International Choral Kathaumixw & Outreach Concerts Tour Week (3/7/18 – 15/7/18) with the Echology Choir from the University of Newcastle.

We have been busting our dot to make this opportunity a reality since we found out in March. But the reality is we are coming short due to sponsorship opportunities falling through last minute and places not paying us for gigs (following up). Our flights are secured but we have bit the bullet and hoping you can potentially help us out.

We’ve started a crowd funding campaign through GoFundMe in hopes to get us over the line and reach our goal of $3000 to go towards: Tour expenses; Accommodation; Tickets to concerts; Competitions; Social events; Festival transportation; Swimming pool pass; Festival souvenir program; Tour uniforms and other festival events at the XXIV International Choral Kathaumixw & Outreach Concerts Tour Week.

All choirs and soloists from around the world are invited to participate in various competitions. The competitions are open to all amateur choirs and soloists. The competitions are judged by a jury of internationally renowned musicians, and first and second prizes are awarded in each category. All choirs will receive positive and constructive written comments from our international jury, and first prize winners will perform in the Kathaumixw Awards Concert.

We are excited to develop, grow as performers and meet people from around the world to share music. It’s important to us to participate in these performances and discussions concerning people on local and global levels. We’re super keen to make international cultural connectors within these areas with fellow performers, conductors and educators from around the world who are working across music and the arts.

Thanks again for the support and just know that you and the support are all appreciated. Drop either of us a message for any further information.

Much love

Jacob & Kat

Kat Waria - www.facebook.com/wariamusic/

Kat Waria is a singer, songwriter, performer and multi-instrumentalist whose indie/pop sound can be attributed to the eclectic range of music she heard growing up. Citing Fleetwood Mac, Missy Higgins, Sara Bareilles, Ashanti, Jessie J, Jojo and Demi Lovato as major influences, Kat has the ability to pull you in with her warm and inviting presence but keep you engaged with her raw yet sincere performances.

Born into a creative household, her mother a visual artist, her father a musician and both being dancers, it was almost innate that she would also be involved in the arts. She believes having exposure to all of her parent’s creative endeavours from a such a young age decided her fate long before she had a choice.

“I have been surrounded by music or the arts my whole life, I have never thought of being anything but a performer. There are not enough words to describe the adoration and connection that I have with music” – Kat Waria.

Kat is both Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and identifies as a descendant of the Woppaburra tribe of Great Keppel Island and Argun Tribe of Badu Island. Kat has experience performing on a variety of events across Queensland and New South Wales such as the G20 World Leaders Summit Opening, Tamworth Country Music Festival, Hats Off To Country: DAG Sheepstation Songwriters Retreat and Showcase, The Gathering Indigenous Showcase, Wandiyali Indigenous Surf Contest, Yugambeh Festival, CMC Rocks ‘Country Comes to the City Competition’ and the 2015 Indigenous Sports Awards. She has also featured in stage productions Blak Electric and Knock Knock at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC), In Session at Queensland Theatre Company (QTC) and Vox Onyx at Brisbane Powerhouse. Through these experiences Kat has had the opportunity to work with the likes of Stephen Helper, Stella Majewsky, John and James Morrison, William Barton, Lyn Bowtell and the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) to name a few. In addition to performing Kat has also worked alongside Indigenous organisations like the Artie Beetson Foundation, Australian Indigenous Mentoring Experience (AIME), Link Up, Cape York Aboriginal Australia Academy, Kuril Dhagun at Queensland State Library and multiple NAIDOC Celebrations.

Kat recently received her Advanced Diploma in performing arts from the Aboriginal Centre for the Performing Arts (ACPA) where she studied under Nathaniel Andrew, Stella Majewsky, Zoe Georgakis-Ray and Miss Laine. Currently undertaking a Bachelor of Music majoring in voice at the University of Newcastle Conservatorium of Music, her future plans include completing her degree, continue performing to perfect her performance skills, release an EP of original music and eventually tour both nationally and internationally.

International Choral Kathaumixw - www.kathaumixw.org/about.shtml

The idea of Kathaumixw was born because Don James, C.M., music director of the Powell River Academy of Music, wanted to establish an international choral festival in North America that would be on par with festivals he and the Academy Choirs had experienced in Europe.

He was out hiking with his friend Dal Matterson, and inspired by the beauty of their surroundings, Don suggested to Dal that they organize a festival in Powell River. Dal agreed to be chairman of the festival, and in 1984 the two men, with a group of close friends, successfully organized and launched the first International Choral Kathaumixw. What happened next was beyond anyone’s expectations.

Since the first festival, which about 400 singers attended, International Choral Kathaumixw has taken place every two years. The festival almost doubled in size in 1986, and in 1988 it developed a definite international flavour. Today more than 1,200 singers from around the world gather at each festival to share their music, culture and friendship.

Kathaumixw has been a breeding ground for musical talent and innovation. Several works have been commissioned for festivals over the years, including staged choral works by Canadian and foreign composers. Each year the festival features Artists in Residence, internationally renowned soloists, orchestras and a distinguished international jury.

International Choral Kathaumixw has received tremendous support from the local community. In fact, volunteers ensure the success of the festival. Core Kathaumixw committee members work for months to organize the festival and all its details. Many Powell River community members volunteer around the time of the festival, and there is always a job to be done. From providing and organizing transportation to readying venues to planning meals and homestays, volunteers always step up to the plate. Many local people open their homes and welcome foreign visitors during Kathaumixw week.

Powell River is a beautiful, quiet town located on the Upper Sunshine Coast, about 80 air miles north of Vancouver. Citizens of this small community have gained tremendous pride in hosting the International Choral Kathaumixw and are pleased to have Powell River recognized worldwide for its choral activity.
