My name's Carys & I am a spoken word poet and musician. Last year I submitted a proposal for a one-woman show to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and to my surprise it was accepted. Due to financial constraints, travel/educational commitments, & other factors, I made the difficult decision to turn the slot down.
I have spent the past year living and working overseas and developing my script, & the result is an hour-long autobiographical piece entitled 'Professional Nomad: What happens when a gap year becomes a gap decade?'. It's a series of anecdotes, stories, and poems chronicling my life and travels since graduating from university, some amusing, some poignant.
The show focuses on a number of themes including my 5+ years in South Korea, the reverse culture shock of returning 'home', personal battles with anxiety & depression, and the existential crisis that comes with hitting my 30s & still having no idea what I'm doing with my life.
I have been given a second chance to perform at the Fringe this year. I was hoping to be able to fund the show myself, but due to unfortunate and unexpected circumstances, I ended up losing my job and my home. As a result, I'm now worse off financially than when I left the UK so I'm turning to crowdfunding. I was initially aiming to raise £1500 but I've lowered my target tp £1000. If I reach my goal (once fees have been deducted), I'm hoping I should have enough money to cover my flight back to the UK from Laos (my current location), promotional materials for the show, transport & accommodation etc.
I'd hugely appreciate any donations, & if you can't afford to contribute, please help me by spreading the word.
See you at the Fringe!
