Catherine Abigail Wawira Muse fondly known as “Wawi,” or “Cathy,” was a beautiful soul. Dearly loved by her husband, children, parents, family and friends, Cathy’s presence was a living testimony of inner strength, grace, and vitality.
The eldest child of John and Emily Muringih, Wawi was born on December 10, 1973. Her sister Caroline was born the following year and the two were inseparable. Cathy was a quick study and was running the affairs of the home before she was 10, earning her mother’s fond description of “a great administrator.” Her younger siblings Lilly, Mosha and Chiri attest to her nurturing gift.
Cathy attended Rabai Road Primary School from 1980-1987 and thereafter joined Karima Girls High School from 1988-1991. After completing secondary school, she enrolled in various courses, then left for Germany from 1995-1996 where she was an au pair to improve her language skills. Following her time in Germany, Cathy returned briefly to Kenya before travelling to the USA in 1997 where she lived with Paula and the Late Bob Singleton while attending Montgomery College in Gaithersburg, MD.
Between 1999 and 2008 she worked at World Space International and Fairfield Development after which she transitioned into full-time homemaker. Cathy attended Bethel International Outreach Ministries where she was an active member of the East African Ministry. In the summer of 1999 Cathy met Geoffrey Musanga Muse at Bethel and they began a 6-year courtship which culminated in their blessed union on March 19th 2005.
On July 5, 2005 Cathy welcomed Nathan Chickamai Muse to the world. Their second child, Camille Muthoni Muse had a more dramatic entrance on February 15, 2007 when Cathy stoically delivered with grace and without complaint in the hospital elevator! That was Cathy. She made even childbirth seem easy. In 2006 Cathy and Geoffrey moved to Hagerstown, MD where she built a warm and welcoming hearth for her husband, children, and everyone that visited their home. Her infectious smile and calming presence made everyone who met her feel at ease.
In 2010, Cathy started homeschooling their children using the Classical Conversations curriculum, and she poured herself into this new endeavor. Her can-do spirit came alive after turning 40 and found her learning to ride a bicycle in an hour, learning to care for horses and jousting like a knight, learning to swim, and performing in theater plays. Cathy also loved to cook and explored different tastes, textures and recipes on her family. These new endeavors and adventures knit together the Muse family and caused them to invest time in each other, time which unbeknownst to them was to be cut short.
Catherine was taken ill on Sunday November 22nd 2015 and was diagnosed with cancer, and given 1-3 weeks to live. Following multiple rounds of chemotherapy the tumors were stable. However the toxicity of the treatment weakened her. As a result she rapidly deteriorated, and on Tuesday, December 13, 2016, Cathy closed her eyes and breathed her last. It was quiet, very peaceful and she was surrounded by family.
Our beloved is survived by her husband Geoffrey, children Nathan and Camille, parents, siblings, and relatives.
Rest in peace Cathy. We will miss you. See you soon.
