Objective

To Provide Hope to wounded Veterans who struggle with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) &/or  Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) & their Caregivers in the Northern Virginia/ DC/ Maryland area.

The Odds:

22: Veterans a day Commit Suicide (1 EVERY 65 min),
4x: Veterans w/ TBI more likely to Commit Suicide than without
90%: Divorce rate for veterans who return with PTSD
Returning from combat & looking for a job....

Returning from combat and looking for a job is a daunting task for any veteran.  Its even more daunting for the wounded veteran who is disabled with PTSD/TBI and is trying to navigate the uncharted waters of Federal and/or Private-Sector employment.

Goals

To fund on a semi-annual basis the “Warriors-in-Wellness H.A.R.R.T© Retreat” and provide on a quarterly basis, CFR’s Life Enrichment Resource Community (LERC) outreach and training & education program. Through the funding of these programs we will include Bio-Pyscho-Social Interventions along with Professional Life Coaching, Employment workshops, and Intimacy Therapy for Couples.

H.A.R.R.T©;

Holistic:

Bio-Pyscho-Social Interventions that focus on the mind, body, soul, & spirit,

Alternative:

Therapies that rely on less prescription drugs and more Bio-Pyscho-Social interventions,

Residential:

Community setting tranquil environment away from the flag pole,

Resiliency:

Engage, Inspire, & Develop Positive Coping & Thinking skills to support & strengthen mental dexterity, Self-Efficacy, & Fortitude,

Transition:

Assist, Train, & Educate, veterans & caregivers through CFR's methodology of REAP© [Restoring, Equipping, Assisting, and Preparing] that will help sustain a successful transition to an actively engaged life within community, which includes assistance with job placement and access to resources.Solution

The Unsung Heroes

The Family Caregivers are the ones whom the responsibility of taking care of their loved one often falls upon and they do so without any training or assistance.  They are thrown into a stressful situation with little resources for helping their loved ones recover.  Not wanting to give up or abandon their wounded veteran, they try to be compassionate, but have trouble convincing their counterpart to open up and share the burden.  The frustration builds up for the couple and leave them with very little options for a healthy relationship.

Participants engage in training, counseling, mentoring, and physical activities to nurture & expand self-skills to transition from CFR to home. Through the Warrior-to-Warrior Campfire (W2W-CF) and Caregiver to Caregiver fireplace sharing, participants will be able to form bonding and trust relationships with others who have similar experiences.

Stigma that surrounds PTSD or TBI in the workplace is overwhelming.

"About one in three employers consider post-traumatic stress disorder to be an impediment to hiring a veteran," this causes many returning veterans to keep quiet and not ask for the help they need at all or to usr the RA process for fear of what others will think of them or how it will negatively impact their future.

Project Outline

What makes Camp Freedom Ranch different...

What makes CFR unique is having a disabled veteran as the founder & president who has worked for the Federal & Private-Sector and faced the uphill battles and challenges of the lack of training and education in helping disabled veterans as well as the discrimination, and stigma that exist in the workplace today. Although employment in the Federal and Private-Sectors’ have not been without their challenges, the lessons learned from these experiences in both sectors have proven to be invaluable.

CFR exist to provide hope through assisting, engaging, equipping, training, and educating other veterans & caregivers on how to successfully overcome obstacles before them.

Experiential Education

I have discovered that barriers, misconceptions, preconceived notions, and a huge learning curve exist in the transition from being in a community of Warriors and service to country to that of civilian employment in either sector. Working in both sectors has proven that they are very similar with regards to the lack of knowledge, training, and education their personnel posses with regards to actively engaging and employing disabled veterans.

Through CFR’s Life Enrichment Resource Community (LERC) outreach education program we will help veterans, caregivers, and employers ensure they are equipped for the task at hand to successfully and gainfully employ Wounded Veterans within the workforce so that everyone involved will have a positive and productive experience.

One way we will achieve this goal is through experiential learning (or Learning through Action) and real life application where wounded veterans, caregivers, and employers can learn in a manner that is conducive to the retention and recall of the information learned. Being actively engaged in the process of understanding in depth what is being taught so that they can understand the concept at a level that they can generalize and apply the understanding to new situations, or combine the understanding with other concepts they have learned.

Through these experiences I have been provided with a very unique perspective of what many disable veterans face and what can be done to overcome it. Through observation and analysis I have been able to identify key points that most veterans will need in order to navigate a successful transition to an actively engaged life within their community after Service. Here are some of the valuable lessons that will be taught through experiential learning;

Navigating the waters of Federal or Private-Sector Employment
Making the transition,
Resume writing and submission,
The interview,
Employment,
The work environment, and
The processing of the Reasonable Accommodation (RA) request
    - Requirement of the Veteran
    - Requirements of the Employer
    - Timeline and expectations

This process of assisting, training, & educating through our REAP© methodology will help by enabling veterans and caregivers to achieve self-efficacy and the mindfulness they need to be successful.
