My name is Ms. Emma Hansen and I have the distinct privilege of teaching 200+ amazing students whom I affectionately call my Hansen's Heroes. My Heroes live in a high-need community and often lack the means to buy their own school supplies and uniforms. Worley Middle School is a Title I school whose budget is well spent in replacing old textbooks and funding our school's championship-winning sports teams and talented band. I have an incredible sense of pride as a Worley teacher, but I can't always say the same for our students. Our school lacks the kind of technology and aesthetics that can be seen in higher income communities. Because of this, my students don't feel that sense of school pride that creates a positive learning environment that is so essential.

My idea is this: let the students of my school take a sense of ownership over our little community. They'll bring the ideas and the energy, while I guide them to help make our school more beautiful. Students will paint murals, plant flowers, craft decorations, build shelves, and repair windows. They will learn the skills needed to work with their hands, something that is often cathartic for my students with difficult home situations. They will hone their frequently untapped artistic talents. They will spend time with a trusted mentor and similarly positive-minded peers. They will have a chance to have their voices heard and their innovative ideas come to fruition. Most importantly, they'll develop a sense of pride in their school. This is the most valuable of all to me.
