Christina's Service Dog!
Hello all ! My name is Christina Campbell and I am 23 years old. I have Spina bifida and weaker muscle tone that affects my daily life. I am currently in grad school and will graduate in December 2016. I will be transitioning into the work world and I am striving to be independent as possible. This service dog will help me achieve tbose goals!
Currently I have a company who is willing to give me a fully trained service dog for $8,000. This is a lot but it is also a great deal because they normally cost 20 grand. They already have a dog that is well-trained, but he still needs to work on his tasks more. He would be going through a few weeks of training then be released to me after we go through some training to learn to work as a team.
I will apprpeciate whatever gets donated to me! I am aware I may not reach my full goal, but it does not hurt to try. Also even a share will be appreciated <3
This dog will change my life and I will forever be thankful ! I also plan to join Youtube and record our journey together.
Why a service dog?
A service dog will provide many of the tasks I need help with. I would like to not always have to rely on people and it will give me a stronger sense of self.
He will also povide the emotional support of having a cute, loving canine :)
What tasks will he perform?
Mako is training to be a mobility dog. This will include:
- Retrieval
- Pick-up
- Opening doors/cabinets
- Assistance in walking
- Assistance in stairs
- Balance support
What is my ultimate goal?
My ultimate goal is to be more independent. I would like to use Mako instead of humans as frequently as I can. Since Mako will also be trained in balance support, I'd like to be able to get to the point where I walk more using him.
What breed is he/she?
He is a German Shepherd (His picture is the campaign photo)
What is his name?
Mako :)
Why not apply for a nonprofit agency?
The waitlist for the average nonprofit service dog is between 2-5 years. I am graduating in 16 months, but will be starting internships soon. I would like to start the transition now while I'm in a familiar environment and routine so both the dog and I aren't shocked and I can be an effective handler.
