The COOPER LUMEN is a 3-in-1 SOLAR-POWERED WiFi Hotspot, Charging Station, Emergency Light & Social Space
The work continues: We need to raise $25,000 to pay Cooper Union students a stipend, finish the charging station and light, complete the industrial design, materials and fabrication methods.
In 2014 we raised a budget of 10,000 to fund a class at the Cooper Union School of Engineering to produce the first working prototype of the Cooper Lumen.
The first stage of getting the solar-powered wifi hotspot working, and a structural/form concept was a success!
The work continues: Now, we need to raise $25,000 to pay the students a stipend, finish the charging station and light, complete the industrial design, materials and fabrication methods.
People are in love with our prototype! In the summer of 2014 we demonstrated the COOPER LUMEN at the East River Park during Good Old Lower East Side's Summerfest where it provided free solar-powered wifi to the public.
Everyone who stopped by to learn about it said that they would love to have COOPER LUMENS along the New York City waterfront and in public spaces. WE AGREE!

Background on the COOPER LUMEN Project:
Engaging Innovative Design to Enhance Community Resiliency in Post-Sandy NYC
In response to the devastation and disruptions in power and communications, the COOPER LUMEN was conceived to address the demands for resilient communications that are available every day, and in emergencies when typical services fail. The Cooper Lumen becomes a part of the WiFi-NY People’s Emergency Network, which will place these units along Manhattan’s East River Waterfront and in common areas in and around the Two Bridges, Lower East Side, Chinatown, East Village and other New York City neighborhoods.
These neighborhoods -- much of which are made up of high-rise affordable housing developments -- were particularly impacted by Superstorm Sandy’s storm surge, leaving thousands of vulnerable families and elders trapped without power, communications, transportation, or supplies. For many buildings, it took weeks to restore power and communications.
The overall goal of the Cooper Lumen is to help residential corridors impacted by Superstorm Sandy come back even stronger by encouraging the development and implementation of durable and reliable devices that will anchor these neighborhoods for years to come.

The project team acknowledges the ongoing work and support of LES Ready! , (formerly known as the Lower East Side Long Term Recovery Group), a coalition of over 40 community groups and institutions that are working to cooperatively coordinate response, resources, preparedness planning and training in response to Hurricane Sandy and in the event of future disasters.
The Cooper Lumen is a collaboration of Two Bridges Neighborhood Council, and WiFi NY, with design assistance from Milestone Architecture.
