Cycling from Takaka, NZ to Amsterdam, NL
Donation protected
From the middle of August 2014 I will start a cycling tour from Takaka, Golden Bay, New Zealand to Amsterdam, Holland.
It is also a fundraising trip for the homeless and street kids in Cambodia. The main purpose of my cycle tour is to raise funds for scholarships for these kids to learn a profession in one of the technical schools from Don Bosco in Sihanoukville, Phnom Penh or Kep province in Cambodia. On my 60th birthday in January 2015, I hope to be cycling somewhere in South East Asia.
The first step is Christchurch and from there to Sydney, Cairns, Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand to Sihanoukville, Cambodia. In Holland we learn how to cycle from an early age, but never before have I embarked on such a big trip. I have met people who have cycled from Europe to New Zealand and I found that really interesting. A few times when flying to Holland and back, I have wondered who lives down there.
6 months ago I made the decision to give it a go, why not, I am now fit enough and in the flow of new things.
Join me on this epic journey of a lifetime, and follow me via my Blog, Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn for regular updates, insights and funny stories from that Dutch guy on his bike.
Meet some of the kids in Cambodia
Mr. Son Saron - was born on 12 December 1992 in Takeo Province - Cambodia. His family lives in a small village, Thlouk Yol of the Takeo Province. The name of the Father is Srey Sorn and is 46 years old and he is a farmer. The name of the Mother is Boy Kim Ang. Mr. Son Saron is the eldest of this family and he has still 2 brothers and 3 sisters. They are subsistent farmers on a small plot of land which given them the rice for family consumption only if the harvest is good. The family wants their eldest son to a skill and to work in the factory to help the education of his younger brothers and sisters. Mr. Son Saron was accepted in Don Bosco Technical School – Sihanouk Ville on 1 October 2013 in the department of mechanics and welding. He is studying now one year – he is average in the theoretical subjects and doing well in the workshop. Our curriculum is more or less 50 percent theory and 50 percent practice in the workshop. He has good motivation and wants to help his brothers and sisters once he has finished the program in August 2015. His family can contribute but little towards his education. He also needs help for personal necessities. All help for him is welcome.
Miss. Chhun Sopheak - was born on 2 April 1994 in the village of Koh Ton Sae in the Kompot Province – Cambodia. Her Father Chhun San died 17 years ago. Her Mother Yi Hien is 51 years old working as a farmer on a small plot of land (rice farming). She has 2 brothers and 2 sisters and Sopheak is the youngest. Only she has done secondary education as the family wanted her to study and they made many sacrifices to let her study. All did a few years basic education. Her mother needed hospitalization and the only brother still at home to pawn their rice field to pay for mother’s sickness. Miss. Sopheak was accepted at Don Bosco Technical School on 1 October 2013 in the secretarial department (business administration). She is doing average in studies and workshop with over 70 percent. She will graduate in August 2015 (curriculum is two years) and hopes to have a good job to assist her sickly mother. At present the financial situation of this family is extremely difficult. All help is welcome.
Background
Jan van Susteren helped young disadvantaged people like street kids, homeless youths, and youths in crime situations and their families in their own social environment. Every person needs a stable social environment with positive relationships that offer possibilities to grow and prosper. In the past twenty five years have helped develop thirteen different methods to approach these problems. Working on 80 projects in seven different countries, using an approach-to-measure for each individual person. I work with a youngster for a short, (10 to 12 weeks) intensive, intervention period, aimed at re-activating or creating a stable and positive social environment with an 80% success rate.
For the last 10 years I have been living in paradise but feel it is time for a change. With this biking trip I hope to meet lots of interesting people, and to learn from and share insights and ideas and maybe to get involved in or start new projects for the future and along the way.
Other skills: PPL pilot license, chef, building, counselling.
