Young Musician Initiative

Tax deductible
In March of 2016, the Young Musician Initiative lost more than $50,000 in grant funding.

This is in spite of the fact that we've worked with very low overhead, managed our budgets carefully, and produced amazing results in our nearly 4 seasons.

We work in Title 1 bilingual schools, in underserved communities, bringing excellent music education, community building, student empowerment, and increased academic successes to our young musicians.  We hear time and again from their parents and classroom teachers that our program increases self confidence, cooperation, and responsibility.  We track our student data through teacher and parent surveys as well as report card info, and we are incredibly proud to report increases in students' grades and decreases in truancy.

If all of this is true, how would we ever lose funding?

It is a great question.  The foundations and institutions we'd counted on in the past tell us that they are shifting their focus away from the arts. We believe this is a critical mistake, not just for the 150+ students with whom we currently work, but for their communities at large.

As an El Sistema USA program, we know the track record youth arts organizations have for changing lives and uplifting entire societies.  Please join us by investing in our community and our future.  We've already cut staffing during some hours of our program.  Multiple staff members have voluntarily reduced their own pay to try to keep us afloat. Your donation will allow us to continue to operate in the three schools we already reach (in the Barelas and Old Town neighborhoods of Albuquerque, and in To'Hajiilee, New Mexico), and prevent further and more significant reductions in our program hours and program staffing.  The need is immediate, and every bit you can spare will help.

Thank you for supporting New Mexico's youth!
