Committing to a plant-based lifestyle changed my life.

I’ve always wanted to provide not just a creative outlet for the community, but a channel within an environment that promotes both physical and spiritual wealth.

Growing up and traveling between my grandparents and mother, I experienced the best of both worlds; really great tasting junk food and not-so-great tasting healthy foods. My mother was very big on healthy eating, and although my grandparent’s food was not as healthy, it did taste better. I was motivated to change the eating habits I picked up from my Grandma once they resulted in weight gain, skin and blood circulation issues after my first year of high school.

I became a vegetarian in high school, and maintained a fairly poor vegetarian diet up until the arrival of my son in 2009. Miles motivated me to go completely vegan and maintain a holistic lifestyle. A lifestyle that would show him the true benefits of being conscious of what you put in and around your body. My son eats a mostly Vegan diet, including no animal milk and eggs (unless prebaked into something) and most times cheese. He does not consume soda or excessive amounts of junk foods. I take pride in what I have accomplished in one year of homeschooling Miles. It has prepared him well for first grade in the fall. He has received a full ride to a private school. Miles and his father enjoy grocery shopping trips where Miles picks out all his favorite fruits and veggies, most of which he can spell or recognize by name.

For the last year I volunteered at the DC General Family Shelter with a local Non Profit, where I would often provide a healthy snack to the children after engaging them in reading and stimulating playtime. Summer 2014, I taught music business with The Musicianship, a DC based Non Profit that offers music lessons, paid performance opportunities and music business classes to inner city high school kids.

I am not interested in chastising people for the way they eat. I want to educate people on why they don't have access to the best, healthiest foods, why they should care and what we can all do to change the eating habits in our community. Know better, do better. I know I can be a positive influence in people's kitchens. I want to provide blenders, juicers, farmers market vouchers for free fresh foods, food activities in public schools, workshops for moms and their daughters, anything to encourage people to eat better and be more conscious of what they are putting in and around their body.
Thank you for reading my story. I hope you are inspired by my vision. Please, share any resources you may have. Love&Light
