Dominican Beauty & Service

Hello!

My name is Jenny Butzbach, and I am a sophomore in Barrett, the Honors College at Arizona State University. I am a Dean's List student currently studying nonprofit leadership and management with a minor in public relations and strategic communications.

In recent years I have become very passionate about how the media portrays beauty in different cultures. I have seen how detrimental the effects of “beauty” in the media has been on people within the United States and globally. Whether it is a result of eating disorders or a lack of confidence, the effects have not been positive.

In August I will be studying abroad in Santiago, Dominican Republic. It is a semester-long program that incorporates the culture of the Dominican Republic along with numerous service opportunities. While I am in Santiago I will begin working on the thesis project required for my bachelor's degree.

I became interested in community service when I went on a mission trip to Tokyo, Japan, in 2011. While I was there I helped teach students English and shared my faith.

In 2013 I went on a mission trip to San Miguel De Allende, Mexico. There, I helped at Casa de los Angeles, a day care that is a secure place where poor working mothers have the comfort of knowing their children are safe. Both of these experiences have opened my heart to service opportunities outside the U.S.

In the Dominican Republic, I will be creating a documentary that focuses on reaching out to Dominicans and getting a different perspective on how beauty is related to media in their country. It is my hope to empower men and women both locally and abroad to pay less attention to the media and more attention to actual beauty.

Media in Western Europe and North America portrays beautiful women as having flawless skin, skinny figures and overall body enhancements. All of the magazine covers and ads are photoshopped giving people an unrealistic view of what beauty is. It is my hope to create a documentary that shows that beauty is more than just the fashion industry's perspective. Beauty has a broad definition and is not just what we see on the cover of magazines. I believe this documentary will be eye opening for Americans and I hope it will expand their definition of beauty.

Now this is where I need your help. I am hoping to raise $4,000 to help fund airfare, camera equipment, program fees, and living expenses. I have been lucky enough to receive scholarships for most of the program and work two part-time jobs, but I still need more money to cover some of the costs for the program and the documentary.

I am very thankful for any help that I receive. I will be creating a blog and I will name my sponsors on the blog. I will be giving weekly updates with my progress serving the community and creating my documentary. I am very excited to get started on this project and hopefully impact the lives of those I come into contact with.
