Art for the Unarmed
Donation protected
Since 1999, nearly 90 unarmed people have been shot and killed by local police departments, atleast 66 of those people were people of color. This issue isn't about race as much as it's about class. Poor people are victimized by police departments at a much higher rate than there more well to do. No one knows how many of these shootings have actually taken place due to the fact that police departments are not required to report statistics to the FBI. This is not a new occurence police have historically oppressed disadvantaged communities across this country. Social media has finally given us a platform to highlight these incidents. We should maximize it's use in hopes alleviating unjust practices of state and local police forces.
We are creating a collection of sketches and poems commemorating as many unarmed victims of police as possible. We are also collecting works of art from other artists from a variety of disciplines including photography, music, and painting in order to make the exhibit as robust as possible.
Then we're putting together an exhibition and speaking tour in order crystalize the conversation and make sure that each victim has a name, face, and a story. Along the way we will vlog, meet with their families and friends, whenever possible, and at the close of the exhibit we will send each piece to the families of the victims along with checks from my collected honorariums.
Planned exhibits will be in Harlem, Oakland, LA, Portland, St. Louis or Chicago (no venue yet), Atlanta, Memphis, and Miami. If anyone knows anyone who has been a victim of such an incident please contact. Thank you.
We've set a goal of $24 for the hours in a day. I believe that people who believe in this will poor out the love necessary to put on the exhibit . Artists subsmissions can be sent to me through gofundme's contact link.
Let's do this together!
