Eddie Lang Day Philadelphia 2019
Donation protected
Hello and Thank You for your interest in the Eddie Lang Scholarship Program of Philadelphia !
I am Richard Barnes, a musician and leader of the Philadelphia area's Premier authentic 1920s Jazz band - Blackbird Society Orchestra , specializing in the music of the Jazz Age, the Roaring 20s , the Gatsby era...and focusing on the works of the "Father of Jazz Guitar " himself - South Philadelphia's own Eddie Lang.
In October of 2010 I organized "Eddie Lang Day in Philadelphia" with the intention of bringing attention to Lang and his music through a night of songs and stories by 5 bands and over 50 musicians. Made official with a Mayoral Proclamation by Mayor Michael Nutter , we raised $2500.oo to help feed the less fortunate around the Holiday season .
Each year I have held Eddie Lang Day in Philadelphia ( traditionally October 25th , Lang's birthday ) and for this year I have something special planned.
I am proud to announce that after.......
I am very fortunate to have discovered music when I was 8 years old. Starting on Clarinet, then Cello and then Guitar . It has opened my ears and eyes and mind up to many wonderful things and experiences . I've made many friends through music. I've expanded my cultural appreciation. It kept me off the streets , preventing me from being bored with life and helped me grow as a person.
I believe that music not only increases your appreciation of the arts but also improves your mind , your reading and literacy skills , reasoning, mathematical abilities , emotional intelligence ....and just makes you smile and feel good !
I think every child should have the opportunity to experience that. A chance to learn . A chance to interact with new people. A chance to create .
The costs of an instrument or classes should not be the wall that stands between a child and their dreams and through the Eddie Lang Scholarship Program of Philadelphia , I'd like to make sure that never happens.
I would like to set a deadline to meet the goal of $5000.oo by May 1st 2016 .
