EDE Haiti Medical Mission 2016

Donation protected
Every year, over 13 million children under the age of 5 years die from illnesses which could have been avoided or treated. As you are reading this, the right to healthcare is currently not a reality for millions of children around the globe, and more particularly in developing countries. Some of the most vulnerable of these victims in the world can be found in Haiti, as it is currently ranked the poorest country in the western hemisphere. After the 7.0 magnitude earthquake that hit Haiti in 2010, many physicians moved to wealthier countries, leaving Haiti in an even worse state than before with inadequate medical equipment, personnel, and a healthcare system with no structure.

This summer our team of seven students (Carmen Zheng, Thu Dam, Serena Ngan, Kayla Epple, Stacie Sterner, Kalyn Mozulay, and Jonathan Mo) from universities across the country (Brown, DeSales, Johns Hopkins) will have the great privilege of going to Haiti to serve and care for some of these underrepresented people on a medical mission trip.  We'll pair up with Angel Wings International, a nonprofit organization with a simple mission: to improve the health and well-being of the underserved in the communities of Haiti. While this sounds like a simple statement, without social infrastructure and general education in the areas they serve, it can be incredibly difficult. Angel Wings International aims to help communities to develop sustainable, high level healthcare and personal care education to everyone who needs it.

We'll be serving at various clinics and sites in Jacmel, Haiti from May 21 - June 6. Our team will build rewarding relationships with the medical staff and patients as we spend time each day interacting with patients and assisting physicians. We have also prepared a health literacy program to present to the local schools in Jacmel. We will be facilitating interactive and informational presentations about access to clean water, nutrition, family planning, and the prevention of common diseases like zika and malaria. We will also be walking through the concept of human capital flight to raise awareness of the detrimental cycle of poverty in the students’ community and encourage students to become leaders in their own community. You can view our proposal by clicking here.

We created this GoFundMe account to ask you to financially consider partnering with us on this trip. We need to raise a total of $3,000 by May 1st, 2016 for this trip. These funds cover the cost of the medical equipment that we will be using, supplies for our service projects, and the funds we need to raise for our stay in Haiti. Although we plan on holding several fundraising events, we're still in need of any financial assistance you can offer. With your help, we can make a difference not only in our lives, but also in the lives of the patients and students that we will be interacting with in Haiti. If you'd be willing to support us through financial donations, we would greatly appreciate it!

The EDE Project is a recurring annual trip; check out what we've done and pictures from our past visits here.
