Eden Myanmar Build Project

Tax deductible
Eden’s mission is to create a world in which no one is bought or sold.

Human trafficking continues to be the fastest growing criminal industry in the world today, generating over US$150 billion every year.

The Asia-Pacific region is responsible for 73% of the US$99 billion generated through commercial sexual exploitation.

And we want to change that!

At Eden, our opportunity to help victims of human trafficking in Myanmar just got a whole lot bigger.

Eden is a not-for-profit organization with a mission to give women and girls trapped in sexual slavery and forced marriage the tools to build a new life.

Over the past 17 years, we have rescued over 700 young women and girls from sexual slavery through our outreach, counselling, and education programs in six major Asian cities. We have created safe shelters, built an international jewellery social enterprise that economically empowers victims of human trafficking and provided practical assistance to thousands of people caught in trafficking.

We have the chance to increase our reach fourfold, and we need your help.

With financial support from some of our incredible partners, we have purchased 5 acres of land in a key city in Myanmar in order to build a safe space where we can expand our program.

Through the Myanmar Build Project, we plan to construct:

-  Safe accommodation for trafficking survivors

-  A mother and child specific accommodation shelter

-  A kindergarten and childcare centre with a playground

-  Specialized vocational training centres where the women and girls will learn skills to help them gain employment. This includes beauty, accountancy, IT, and language training.

-  Sewing and jewellery workshop spaces

-  Trauma counselling rooms

-  A dance studio for dance therapy

-  A therapeutic and healing garden

-  An exhibition centre and café to showcase work created as part of our programs

We will move our existing Myanmar operations to the new property and have dreams of using the land to allow us to be self-sustainable with food, water and electricity.

The opportunity to buy land and scale up our program to reach more women and girls was presented to us by one of the city Mayors. We then arranged a donor that was willing to purchase the land and donate it to Eden.

The project is in motion. We’re now in the process of getting the soil test done, putting a fence around this block and finalising the building design.

Now, it’s time to build the facilities, and we need your financial support to help make this dream a reality.

We want to make a space where girls can escape horrible situations. It will be a safe place and a sanctuary where healing can begin.

Your donation will help us bring hope, light and love to these women and girls.

Who is Eden?

Eden’s mission is to create a world in which no one is bought or sold.

Eden walks into the red-light district and connects with those that are trapped, stolen, tricked and trafficked.

Once we’ve been able to connect with the girls and the women, we bring them into safe housing, we provide them trauma-informed care and access to art, dance and music therapy. We provide them with vocational training and an opportunity for employment. This means they have an income, allowing them to continue to go through the trauma-informed care and work through their past.

Our relationship-focused and trauma-informed approach has granted us unprecedented access to the hidden victims of human trafficking forced to work in trafficking hubs and red-light districts. This access has enabled us to identify and assist trafficking victims not yet identified by official government systems and help to collect ground-breaking trafficking data.

Eden is currently the only organization offering safe shelter and employment to victims alongside professional trauma counselling in Myanmar. This unique programming is proven to address the root causes of trafficking, reduce re-trafficking and facilitate sustainable reintegration after program graduation.

Understanding human trafficking:

It is estimated that over 45 million people are enslaved in our world today.

According to the International Labour Organization, forced sexual exploitation and forced marriage account for more than 19.5 million lives, with 99% of all sexual exploitation victims being female.

In Myanmar, traffickers take advantage of a high level of migration and poverty.

Approximately one-third of Myanmar’s population having migrated between rural and urban centres over the past 10 years. This puts individuals at risk to traffickers who promise employment.

Vulnerable girls and their families are promised work, often internationally, and are tricked into leaving their families.

Often when a trafficked person arrives at their destination, they are immediately taken to either a red-light area where they are threatened and/or forced into prostitution or taken to a household where they are sold as a bride.

Most women in Eden’s program in Myanmar were originally migrant workers from smaller towns and villages who were seeking work in key cities or regional hubs.

Myanmar’s Shan and Kachin States experience significantly high levels of bride trafficking and trafficking for sexual exploitation. This is due to ongoing internal conflict, proximity to other Asian countries, minimal livelihood options and weak border controls.

The Myanmar Build Project will help us expand our reach and help those who have been trafficked and exploited.
