Here is some information about my plans:
On May 9th, 2015 I will graduate from Indiana University with a bachelor’s degree in Human Biology, concentrating in human health and disease. Eight days later, I will embark on a journey that will undoubtedly change my life forever. I will be spending 45 days doing volunteer medicine in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania with Projects Abroad. During my time there I will be working in a hospital as well as doing medical outreach to local villages and orphanages. My responsibilities will be gathering patient histories, taking vital signs, attending to minor wounds, observing and assisting in procedures, and even helping to deliver babies! Everything I’ve learned during my undergraduate career has built up to this, but I know it will be difficult to emotionally prepare for such a humbling experience in a third world country.
I look at my time in Africa as not only a way to give back, but also as a way to gain a better insight into the world. While volunteering I will be living with a local host family and establishing valuable relationships with health professionals and volunteer friends from around the world. Being in a third world hospital, the facilities will be under sourced and every volunteer will make a difference. At the end of my project, I hope to return home with a sense of accomplishment, compassion, and a better understanding of global health and patient care.
As this experience is unpaid, I will incur costs for flights, the program fee, vaccinations, and living expenses. I plan to contribute a significant portion of my own funds and I’m applying for funding through grants and sponsorships. I am also relying on the help of my friends and family. Even a small amount will get me one step closer to my goal. Thank you in advance for any support you can give.
