Empowered Girls, Empowered Women

Inspiration
The inspiration for Empowered Through Fitness came after Stephanie Diaz (founder) participated in a local 5K race and observed the female elite-field runners; they all looked strong and athletic! A few days later, Stephanie observed a group of high schoolers during P.E. class and noticed that several of the female students slowed down or stopped altogether during the run portion of the class.

On the one hand, Stephanie was in awe of the female runners she saw at the race, but, on the other hand, Stephanie was saddened to think that the high schoolers were perhaps not participating fully due to something like a lack of proper breast support. The question then became: what is the impact of a sports bra on a girl’s athletics and sports participation? Research has shown that lack of health knowledge and proper breast support DOES result in declines in athletics and sports participation for girls. Beyond this, what can be done to support athletic pursuits and to create a sense of overall empowerment in young girls and women through fitness? These are the questions that Empowered Through Fitness will try to answer through initiatives such as Girl Empowerment Fair.

Mission

The mission of Empowered Through Fitness is to provide tools and interventions for empowering women and girls through access to community resources that will aid them in creating and sustaining an active lifestyle.

Initiatives
The Girls Empowerment Fair is an initiative in collaboration with the Miami-Dade County Public Schools occurring on Friday, October 19, 2018. This event will be at a Title I school in Homestead, FL with all girls in fifth- through eighth-grade participating. The Girls Empowerment Fair will be a day dedicated to celebrating girls, both by giving them an "Empowered Bag" with a sports bra, period kit, t-shirt, and literature related to female health and development and by giving them access to community resources, including panel discussions from community leaders, that will empower the girls through knowledge and experience to embrace their uniqueness and explore the benefits of an active lifestyle.

30/30 Empowered Fit is an initiative with End Rape Culture, another 501(c)(3) charity, that aims to combine self-defense and yoga in a one-of-a-kind experience that will leave participants feeling safe, secure, and strong in their own bodies. Classes will be held monthly throughout the city of Miami.

Empowered TRY is a collaborative effort with Miami-based female-led businesses to bring a "triathlon" of movement where participants complete a triathlon of empowerment: run, self-defense, and yoga.

Donations
Donations will be put toward funding the above stated events and toward the creation of more community-based events for women and girls in the greater Miami-area. Your donation will help pay for sports bras, yoga mats, event space, and speakers. The goal is to make The Girls Empowerment Fair an annual event with the ability to invite more girls from more schools and to create affordable yoga and running-related events that will support an active lifestyle. Need for donations is ongoing.

Stephanie Diaz created this GoFundMe and will be overseeing it on behalf of Empowered Through Fitness. Empowered Through Fitness is a 501(c)3 charity recognized by the IRS; EIN  82-4929044.
