We are Team Japan of the Blood and Thunder Roller Derby World Cup 2014 and would like to introduce ourselves to the world of roller derby.
The Blood and Thunder Roller Derby World cup is the largest international roller derby tournament organized by Blood and Thunder magazine. The first tournament was held in 2011 with 13 countries. This year there will be 30 countries competing in Dallas, Texas - December 2014. The large increase of countries participating is an amazing display of how quickly the sport of roller derby is spreading internationally. Not only is this year’s Team Japan the first team representing Japan, but we’re also proud to be the very first team to come from Asia.
Roller Derby in Japan
Once upon a time in the 70’s, there was an aggressive full-contact sport played on banked tracks called “Roller Game” that was really popular in Japan. A very similar sport, “Roller Derby” has been gaining popularity all over the world and was introduced to Japan by Americans living on military bases a few years ago.
Interest in roller derby is slowly spreading across the country and several Japanese national skaters have joined a WFTDA (Women’s Flat Track Derby Association) member league called the Tokyo Roller Girls (TRG). We even have a few Ex-Roller Game players who have joined the league and are learning the rules and culture of roller derby.
These skaters went on to form Team Japan, which will be the first all Japanese national skater team to participate in the Roller Derby World Cup in Dallas, December 2014. In addition to our skaters in Japan, we also recruited roller derby skaters living in the United States including California, Texas, and Vermont. There will be 30 countries participating in the World Cup this year and Team Japan is proud to be the first team to come from Asia.
Team Japan was officially born in June of this year and we opened our Facebook Page (Team Japan Roller Derby) the same month. We were very surprised and thankful to gain over 1,000 "Likes" in just two days!
We are probably among the newest international teams that will participate in the World Cup this year. Just like any newborn babies in the world, we need your help!!!
What We NEED:
Your donation will help fund our travel and stay in Dallas, Texas. Between plane tickets and accommodations, each team member will need approximately 1,600 U.S.dollars. We have 21 people total including skaters, coaches, and staff. I personally wish Japan’s famous Godzilla can give us all a ride to Dallas, but he has a previous engagement so instead, we will do everything we can to travel cheap.
OUR GOALS:
We would like this experience to grow and learn from all the strong women from all over the world but also hope to inspire them as well. We hope to come back and further spread roller derby in Japan and introduce the new generation to the sport and culture of roller derby.

私達は"ローラーダービー"というスポーツの ワールドカップ2014公式女子日本代表チームです！
みなさんはローラーダービーというスポーツをご存知ですか？？？
少しだけ、簡単にローラーダービーと私達日本代表チームの紹介をさせて頂きたいと思います。
昔、昔といっても40年程前の70年代。 "ローラーゲーム"という格闘スポーツが日本で大流行したのはご存知でしょうか？ 男女が交代で出場し、頭にヘルメット、足にはローラースケート、最大45度の斜度のついたバンクドトラックを何周もし、更に体当たりやジャンプ、乱闘などを しながら得点を競い合う…子供から大人まで多くの人が熱狂した激しくてとても面白いスポーツでした。
当時からアメリカではこのローラーゲームの事を一般的 にローラーダービーと呼んでいたのですが、２０００年代初頭、このローラーダービーはアメリカのテキサス州で新しいスタイルにリメイクされ、フラットトラック(平地)で行なわれる女性の為のスポーツとして産声をあげました。なのでローラーダービーというのは、いってみればローラーゲームの妹みたいなもの ですね。
それが、今、私たちがプレイしている"ローラーダービー"です！
現在、世界中には１０００以上のリーグが存在し、世界規模でみると大変人気の高いアマチュアスポーツとして成長を遂げました。日本では２０１０年から日本在住の米軍基地関係者を中心にチームが結成さ れ、現在日本には4つのリーグがあります。
今のところ日本人の全選手がその中の1つであるTokyo Roller Girlsリーグに在籍し活動しています。
最近ではハリウッド映画の”ローラーガールズ・ダイアリー"というローラーダービーの映画が日本で公開された事 もあり、ゆっくりではありますが日本国内でも少しづつ認識され始め、日本人のスケーターも増えてきました。
そして今年2014年12月。
米国テキサス州ダラスにて第2回目のワールドカップが開催されます。そして私達日本代表チームが、アジア初の出場を成し遂げる事となりました。
日本チームへ の選手の参加条件は"日本の国籍を持つ選手"。
しかし国内に存在する日本人選手はたったの15人程度の為、海外からも日本国籍を持つスケーターを招集し、今年の6月に本格的にチームが始動しました。
先日開設した日本代表チームの公式Facebookページは、たった2日で千を超える”いいね！”を頂き、チーム一同驚きと感動を噛み締めているところです。
私達日本チームは、今回のW杯に参加する３０カ国の中で恐らく一番結成の遅かった若いチームですが、現在、ローラーダービーの基本理念である"選手による選手の為の運営"を実行し、選手達でチーム運営の全てを行っています。 何もかもが全く初めての事ばかりで、練習以外のリンクの外でも 毎日悪戦苦闘中です。苦労も耐えませんが吸収する物も多く、様々な意味でとても刺激的で勉強になる毎日を送っています。
そんな私達に皆さんの暖かいご支援をぜひお願い致します!!
何に必要か？
皆さまからの寄付金はW杯参加の為の現地(ダラス)までの渡航費および滞在費に使用させて頂く予定です。格安団体航空券と割引ホテルの滞在費をあわせて、一人当たり約１6万円の見積もりです。
人数は、選手とコーチを含むスタッフを合わせて合計21名です。
私達の目標は？
私達は今回、唯一のアジア地域代表としてW杯に参加します。
これはアジアのローラーダービーの歴史に残る出来事。
そんな環境での私達の目標はこの2つです。
1. 今後、多くの日本の人達にスポーツとしてのローラーダービー、また、その背景にある文化(カルチャー)としてのローラーダービーを知ってもらう為に世界にきちんと認識される国際的なチームへの成長を遂げたい。
2. 世界の様々な国の女性と競い合い、日本チームの実力を発揮しながら他国の選手達とお互いに影響を与え合い受け合いたい。
