On December 21, 2021, doctors discovered a mass on a CT scan after a trip to the ER. My sister, Carrie, was soon diagnosed with colorectal cancer. After a brief reprieve were she was told it was a benign growth, a third biopsy came back as cancer. Ultimately, she was staged as Stage 3 adenocarcinoma of the rectum. If you've been following her cancer update page on Facebook, then you probably know these little details. After a referral to UW Madison, she began an oral chemotherapy and a radiation regimen and it felt like we were finally on the path to her beating this nasty disease.
Carrie was hopeful that she would be able to continue working while being treated and therefore not suffer too much of a financial burden due to this illness. Unfortunately, she has suffered some serious complications and is now in critical condition in the hospital.
On Tuesday 3/7/22, she went to the ER after her radiation appointment with complaints of chest pain. They feared a heart attack and she was sent to the cath lab where saw there were no blockages and her heart looked good. She was kept overnight for observations and released on Wednesday, 3/8/22. The doctors' running theory was the chest pains were from arterial spasms caused by her chemo. She was given a new prescription for the spasms and sent home.
Yesterday morning, 3/10/22, she collapsed at home and suffered cardiac arrest. There are many unknowns at this point. We don't know what caused the cardiac arrest, how long she went without oxygen, the extent of injury to her brain from a lack of oxygen, and what recovery entails. At this point in time, she is on a ventilator, is sedated, and being kept in a hypothermic state to give her brain some time to heal.
We ask that you kindly keep her and her family in your prayers. If you can, pray a daily rosary and have a Mass offered for her healing. Please do not stop praying for her and this long and difficult battle ahead.
I started this page on behalf of the George family. All money raised here will go directly to Carrie and Travis to help cover their living and medical expenses while she is in the hospital, and God willing, home recovering from this.
If you know Carrie, then you know that she is the most selfless, loving, gentle, and kind soul. Travis, her kids, my parents, and this world needs her. Please consider supporting them at this difficult time. Thank you and God bless you all.
