Duluth Historical Society - Help save cabin
Donation protected
We are Duluth Historical Society and we are a 501(c)3 non profit organization. For over 15 years, we have supported, researched and saved lost history of this area of Duluth (GA) and part of the South. We are urgently making this request today because a major part of our local history is IN DANGER OF BEING DISTROYED AND LOST FOREVER. It is an original tongue and groove cabin (see picture attached) and without quick action it is earmarked to be torn down by the middle of June 2021 by a developer. It currently is located at 2938 Hwy. 120, beside the Baptist Church, not far from downtown Duluth. So far, it has been dated back to 191 years or older. It would predate the Elisha Winn House in Dacula, GA c1812 and it would make this cabin the oldest tongue and groove cabin in Gwinnett County and would be the source of great pride.
The benefit of saving this cabin is to preserve a life style of pioneer culture that is vanishing. Our children, our schools, our city, and business will be benefited by such a cabin. It will also be a great learning tool for young architects to be able to touch, explore and research the design of a free supporting buildings that was built with hand made tools. John Knox, the first Mayor of Duluth, lived in this cabin many years ago. More photos can be seen on our website. See below.
The funds that are needed will enable it to be moved, reassembled and relocated to another site and have additional funds to be able to maintain it for years to come. Our target amount is $ 70,000. We would be so grateful to know that you shared our passion for history. In the event that we do not have enough funds available, it will be destroyed and all donated money will be returned. We have an escrow acct. where all funds will be held. We will need your name, address, phone number and email so in the event that we have to make refunds, we can find you.
