What is Summer Organizing School?
The Summer Organizing School (SOS) is a platform for free online classes and skills training facilitated by undergraduate and graduate students and instructors from universities in the New York area. We are responding to the interlocking crises of health, race, and labor that COVID-19 has triggered and which university administrators have failed to address. SOS is committed to the principles of anti-racism, gender justice, accessibility, anti-capitalism, and PIC abolition. Our working statement of principles is available HERE . The school will run from July 27th to August 28th.
How will SOS Compensate Facilitators?
The mechanisms for compensating SOS facilitators and raising the funds to do so will reflect those commitments. We will draw on networks of mutual aid and solidarity to compensate facilitators for their work in this collective organizing and political education, rather than mimic the exploitative, hierarchical, and alienating wage structure of the university. Fundraising and compensation will entail:
● Initial fundraising target of $2,000 to compensate SOS facilitators and organizers
● Payment of $150 per session to facilitators
● Nominal use of funds for SOS fixed costs like domain name purchases
● Equal distribution of any additional/remaining funds among facilitators
