Update - May 26, 2023

We at the Andrea Dworkin Archival Project (ADAP) wish to express our deepest gratitude for our supporters, who have really made a difference for us!

In a previous update, dated February 15, 2023, we noted the Fujitsu Image Scanner fi-8250, the intended scanner for our work, at $1,451, $1,567 with tax. Previously, we thought a Brother ADS-4900W Professional Desktop Scanner, at $699.99, $755.00 with tax, would be economical and practical. However, with a maximum optical resolution of 300 dpi pixels, it was necessary for us to rethink it. At that lower quality, it did not exceed the power of any typical scanner—including what Donovan already has in use.

When we looked up the Fujitsu Image Scanner fi-8250, the price at PC Magazine showed $1,755 (without tax), but, at $1,567 (with tax) we found the pricing more reasonable. Other options we perused were in the mid-range, closer around the $1,000 mark. However, while they could produce a desirable optical resolution of 600 dpi pixels, their specs lacked certain areas (e.g., speed, automatic document feeding, or size of the scanning area).

Finding the above scanner at a few hundred dollars off seems reasonable for both its longevity and quality of production. According to the PC Magazine review:

“If you can find the Fujitsu for a few hundred dollars off list price, however, it’s a good match for nearly every machine with similar specs, and you can’t beat Fujitsu for hardware longevity and software quality. The fi-8250 is a terrific scanner with no feature or functionality shortfalls; it just missed being a top pick because of its relative cost.”

At the moment, we are close to the goal for the scanner—minus previous mailing expenses on some boxes of books and resource materials!

Apart from the scanner, over the past few months, covering basic mailing costs has taken priority. Already, Donovan has received a few boxes with secondary texts and articles. Among the works, we have the original Kitty Genovese Women’s Project (KGWP) paper, dated March 8, 1977. Very soon, I will be mailing him my entire Andrea Dworkin archive file for scanning and indexing.

So far, we have produced some documents that can be accessed via the ADAP Facebook page, including the interview during which Dworkin discussed Allen Ginsberg and “pedophile logic.” We have been especially grateful to everybody for reading and sharing our work!

Here is the link to the Andrea Dworkin Archival Project (ADAP) Facebook page:

Donovan has a few previously uncollected works from Dworkin that the ADAP will be posting, including a critical book review she did of Porn Gold: Inside the Pornography Business, a 1988 book that glossed over the harms of the sex industry.

The Dworkin folder will be valuable in looking at some letters and other writings that will contribute to public education on her work. Going through these materials will be essential to the collection process. Additional costs will include maintaining the site (once we get one up and going, apart from the Facebook page) and, for video recordings, converting older VCR tapes into digital files to be more easily uploaded and shared online.

We have been so very thankful for the outpouring of support as we start the Andrea Dworkin Archival Project and feel so hopeful about its possibilities!

We hope that you can help with our project by donating to this GoFundMe. Both of us would be most thankful for any support in our work!

*** If you do not have spare money, then please do not feel like you must donate; we want those who can to feel free, but we understand constraints.

We at the Andrea Dworkin Archival Project (ADAP) are embarking on a long-planned, massive research project. Donations to this fundraiser would serve to cover general expenses for the project, including the cost of mailing materials for documentation purposes. We are looking at purchasing a good quality scanner, though Donovan has available technology for our uses (e.g., an older scanner and Scanner Pro via iPhone).

This Dworkin folder, as pictured, includes individual magazine articles over decades. These collected writings encompass notes and works-in-progress, all of which need to be indexed and archived. In addition, there is the website documentation that we are going to have to sort through. The archival work will include all of the files after Dworkin’s death as well as screenshots of the websites. This project is near to both of our hearts in documenting and preserving Dworkin’s work and legacy.

Please share this fundraiser with interested groups and individuals.
