Better Birth for Unhoused Mother

Donation protected
The East Oakland Collective met Ms. Tanara and her son in East Oakland through our food and supply delivery programs. Ms. Tanara was living in her SUV with her 3-year-old son. She instantly became one of our beloved unhoused mamas, who we helped transition from living unhoused in her car to short-term housing.

This mom and her 3-year-old son have been through a lot. She was placed in foster care early, after losing both of her parents. Not long after the death of her father she turned to drugs to cope with the tremendous trauma she faced being parentless and having faced abuse in foster care. Luckily, an aunt reached out to her to offer her housing so she can get clean. Unexpectedly, the aunt died leaving her once again without a support network and homeless. After the birth of her now 3-year-old and working toward being more sufficient, she was given a voucher through a housing program. She was able to get out of a shelter and found a temporary place that was safe and where she could get herself back on track and get her son some stability. Sadly, others within the house were using drugs and she decided she had to leave. Despite the landlord being required to return her deposit, he did not and she was unable to use it to find a new place. This mom has not only struggled to find adequate safe affordable housing but she has also been a victim of police brutality-- resulting in two of her teeth being knocked out, leaving her in pain and requiring extensive dental work.

Studies show that Black women are more likely to experience difficult birthing experiences through traditional health systems, are more likely to experience medical complications and Black babies have higher mortality rates. Therefore, it is very important for Ms. Tanara to have a culturally relevant midwife, doula and hospital setting. We are asking the community to come together with resources to help support this mom and her 3-year-old as they welcome the birth of a baby girl (due early October). We are collecting funds to go towards a loving and thoughtful birthing experience with a Black midwife and doula ($2,000 cost) at a local birthing center ($7,000 cost).  Any additional funds will go towards securing long-term housing, paying for car registration and necessary items for the baby girl.
